“Four score and seven years ago…” (Gettysburg Address). A speech once given by a man who wanted nothing but the unity and prosperity of the United States. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Hodgenville Kentucky. His first years of growing up were very hard and filled with family tragedies. But as years passed by he became stronger, more educated and later the leader of the most powerful nation in the world. He accomplished a lot during his presidency such as strengthening the federal government, modernizing the economy, and most importantly abolishing slavery. He is a man that did nothing but good and gained civil rights for those who didn’t have them before. He should be respected and acknowledged by all as one of the greatest …show more content…

He knew that the separation of the country would be bad but he also knew that slavery was bad. So Lincoln started off slowly and made changes little by little (Salads). He made changes that were never even talked about before. But these changes made the relationship between the north and the south worse and the south became more tense. Time went by and the south decided they no longer wanted to be apart of the United States and they were going to elect a new leader of the south. Lincoln was not going to have any of this so half of the country lined up behind him and decided to fight against slavery. Lincoln’s original goal was not to destroy the confederates but instead to block off their resources. After the continuation of the North’s tactic (which lasted longer than expected) there was no results being shown. So that is when total war was declared so there could be some type of movement (Stewart 11).
The Civil War was a very intense and tough war that changed America forever. Abraham Lincoln tried to pick Robert E. Lee as the general for the Union army but Robert E. Lee declined because he wanted to represent his home state,Virginia. So he became the general of the Confederate Army. The general of the Union army was Ulysses S. Grant who later became the president of the United States. Both generals were good generals but general Robert E. Lee was definitely the better choice because of the …show more content…

Once slavery ended slaves from all over were officially free and people from all over that were slaves could now live their lives freely. The only problem with this was that slaves had no where to go because they were rarely educated and had nowhere to live. So a lot of them returned to their regular activities working in fields and working in other harsh environments. But just because Abraham Lincoln ended slavery it did not mean that African Americans were no longer going to be discriminated against or have equal rights for the next one hundred years.
After the north’s victory a lot of things changed. The general of the Confederate army, Robert E. Lee wanted to solve the patches between the north and the south. So he did as much as he could to show the south what the best decision was, which was to reunite. Robert E. Lee had a mansion in Virginia right outside of Washington D.C. in order to symbolise a connection between Robert E. Lee and Abraham Lincoln.
