In the 1870s fights broke out, people were murdered, and the country was in chaos. It left us wondering who's to blame for the end of Reconstruction? After the Civil war slaves became freedmen but they didn’t have rights. An era called Reconstruction by historians began. Some people supported it.
Once the Radical Republicans gained control over Congress, the president was helpless. (Shultz, 2014). Even though the Southern states implemented Black Codes, the Radical Republicans had their own agendas. The Military Reconstruction Act irritated the Southern states. However, they were no competition for Congress.
The Thirteenth Amendment took some time to pass. Johnson really didn’t want blacks to have rights. He did everything in his power to make sure African Americans didn’t have freedom. After slavery was abolished the black codes came up in the summer of 1865 in the South. These codes were basically promoting slavery once again but using a different name.
In 1863, both President Lincoln and a group of legislators were working on plans for reconstruction. The President was working on his reconstruction policy, at the same time Congressman Davis and Senator Wade were presenting a bill to congress. Even though the desired outcome would have been the same, and there were similarities, there were a number of differences between the two. Some of these differences caused the President to veto Wade-Davis. President Lincoln was looking to get reconstruction going even before the war was officially won.
If Lincoln weren’t assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, then reconstruct would have been different. Andrew Jackson, the former Vice President now president, passed the black code. The black code granted some right such as marriage and owning property. Although, he didn’t protect all there rights. Some states created a law that abolished the full civil rights of an African American.
There are three primary purpose of Reconstruction. First, bring former confederates states back (reintegrate). Second, rebuilding the country because the South was destroyed because of the Civil War. Then the last one is to bring the freedom to the society. There are two main phases of Reconstruction.
Johnson created the Black Codes, so that blacks had little freedom such as “legalized marriage, ownership of property and limited access to courts (Foner562)” slowly the black community was gaining justice and freedom but the whites wanted to put an end to any freedom. The fear of lynching was at its highest peak.
After the Civil War, a period that spanded from 1863 to 1877, known as the Reconstruction period began. This time in history focused on transforming the South and changing African American lives. Although progress was made during this time, set backs from white supremacy groups like the KluKlux Klan also known as the KKK, people with pre-civil war or racist mindsets, and goverment coruption, the full effect of the Reconstruction would not be truely experienced or seen for about the next century. Northern civil rights activist and radical Republicans worked to secure rights for free blacks. Many towns, countys, and states made Black Codes black codes restricted the rights of free Africa Americans.
Abraham Lincoln impact on society is emotional because every time "The Liberator" would give a speech people would be touched by his words. " The world will little note nor long remember what we say here but it can never forget what they did here." Lincoln didn 't care people forgot to switch all he wanted was for people to remember the people who want fight in the Civil War and risk their lives for other freedom." To prove slavery a very good thing we never hear of the man who wishes to take the good it by being a slave himself. "
The reconstruction was said to have brought a change. However, Newly free slaves faced many challenges, and whites in the south saw blacks as way less than they did before. Black codes were introduced as a way to give people of color freedom in a constitutional form. They were unique to southern states and they each had their own variation of them. It was a way to restrict the black labor force and freed people as much of slave status as possible.
Along with this was the refusal of Southerners to accept the new rights of slaves though, resulting in the black codes. The black codes were laws passed that created a cruel Southern system similar to the one before. Consequently, this destroyed the peace Lincoln anticipated.
1. I expect a president to be decisive, tough, and not afraid of disappointing the people of the United States. I also expect a president to be assertive, and able to think for himself while taking constructive input from others. The president must also be confident, innovative, and, when need be, manipulative and ruthless. I want a president like Abraham Lincoln, who took substantial control of the federal government in order to effectively lead the Civil War.
Abraham Lincoln has long considered to be one of the best presidents of the United States. His work in preserving the union and abolishing slavery are successes unprecedented by the achievements of any other leaders before him. Lincoln faithfully completed the responsibilities of his position during his time in office. Upon examining the many roles a president plays, Lincoln proves to be a strong model of a president’s duties in his office. He very successfully completed his responsibilities as chief executive, foreign policy leader, chief administrator, Commander in Chief, chief agenda leader, chief of state, party leader, and chief citizen.
But, when these officials were elected to Congress, they passed the “black codes” and thus the relations between the president and legislators became worst (Schriefer, Sivell and Arch R1). These so called “Black Codes” were “a series of laws to deprive blacks of their constitutional rights” that they were enacted mainly by Deep South legislatures. Black Codes differ from a state to another but they were stricter in the Deep South as they were sometimes irrationally austere. (Hazen 30) Furthermore, with the emergence of organizations such as the Red Shirts and the White League with the rise of the Conservative White Democrats’ power, efforts to prevent Black Americans from voting were escalating (Watts 247), even if the Fifteenth Amendment to the U.S constitution that gave the Blacks the right to vote had been ratified in 1870.
Abraham Lincoln tries to fix a moment of re-establish the American nation. He keeps on the process by referring to those who died in the battle of Gettysburg defended a noble aim the same as those who died in the Revolution for freedom. Therefore, the fight must be continued till the victory of the union in order to have a new birth of freedom that has a more than a political significance. Relying on his mastery of King James Bible, he succeeded to give his oratory a biblical dimension by sayingMore relatively, mentioning the New Birth of Freedom is traced back to the Declaration of Independence as a sort of typology to the idea mentioned in this theses’ first chapter: the birth of New American Era.
