The biblical figure Abraham grew from a confused man to a faithful one and eventually became the father of faith. Through leaving his homeland and starting a new nation, Abraham grew in his belief of the one God. God’s covenants to Abraham of many descendants, blessings, and a land for his people also helped Abraham to grow in his faith and solidified his relationship with God. Abraham’s trust and faith can be applied to my life and help me to follow God without questioning Him. In the beginning of his story, Abraham was frustrated with the gods of his people. God too, grew to trust Abraham and told him that he planned to destroy Sodom. Upon hearing this, Abraham tried to bargain for Sodom and his nephew Lot’s life. Through bargaining, Abraham illustrated his high level of comfort when talking to God because he was not afraid of God punishing him anymore. God did not let Abraham forget their second covenant and reminded Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. The two also marked their covenant with the sacrifice of an animal that mirrored the sacrifice Abraham’s tribe made to the King of Haran at the beginning of the movie. By using animals in this new covenant, Abraham showed that God’s covenant followed old traditions where blood needed to be shed. All the men and boys in Abraham’s tribe were also circumcised as a sign of the covenant. Finally, God fulfilled his second covenant, and Sarah bore Abraham a son, Isaac. As a last test of Abraham, God told Abraham to bring Isaac, his heir, to the top of a mountain and sacrifice him. Abraham, who had grown in his faith and fully trusted God, went to the top of the mountain but was stopped just before he sacrificed Isaac.
