Oscar Grant III was a 22 year-old African American man who was fatally shot in the morning hours of New Years Day, 2009 by BART Police officer Johannes Mehserie in Oakland, California. Responding to reports of a fight on a crowded Bay Area Rapid Transit train returning from San Francisco, BART Police officers detained Grant and several other passengers on the platform at the Fruitvale BART Station. Officer Johannes Mehserle and another officer forced the unarmed, Oscar Grant to lie face down. Mehserle drew his pistol and shot Grant in the back. Several witnesses claim Mehserle said “Oh my God!”
The shooting and killing of Oscar Grant took place on new years day, in the year of 2009. Officer Johannes Mehserle was the man responsible for this killing. Mehserle was called to a scene where a fight had broken out on a nearby train. He along with other officers worked to resolve the mishap that was taking place. While trying to detain some of the fighters from the train, some resisted.
Some criminals deserve to die because they should not have the privilege to live 30 years after, from being sentenced to death for committing first degree murder. For example, there has been a case, in 1984, where Kermit Alexander’s family was murdered. As a matter of fact, the criminals have not been executed since they have received the death sentence.
American society has always wrestled with the concept and ethics of capital punishment. Despite the meticulous process involved when convicting someone, there are many questions and exceptions about who qualifies and the process in and of itself, as to be expected when dealing with something so profound and permanent. Oscar Grant a 22 year old African American and father to a 4 year old daughter at the time of his death. Mehserle and Grant crossed paths that night changing both of their lives. To Many cases have been seen on the news channels, newspaper, and social media where an officer has responded to a disturbance that ends in the death of an unarmed black man.
