Workers across Europe were astonished by the ideas of Socialism, such as universal suffrage which is based on the idea of equality of all, as the workers were never showed value by the factory owners, so they quickly embraced these new ideas. Social theorists throughout Europe attempted to resolve the issue of poor work conditions and the exploitation of labour, while others want the system to stay the same. In several documents concerning the rights of the workers the authors are in support of granting them their rights, and want a revolution of the workers to overthrow the capitalists/bourgeoisie, while some of the other authors settle for the unity of workers and the reformation of the government through peaceful means. Finally, the socialist movement has been manipulated by the chartists and the women’s rights activists who primarily focused on their own agenda than the workers. Flora Tristan stated in her writings that,“ Workers, it is up to you, who are the victims of real inequality and injustice, to establish the rule of justice and absolute equality between man and woman on this earth” (Doc. 5). Tristan is manipulating workers to make them establish equality between man and woman by providing them , the ‘victims’ , with a false sense of responsibility. The workers are being persuaded by Tristan to take matters into their own hands in order to achieve this, which shows bias towards gender equality by Tristan, but Tristan seems as she supports workers due to her credibility. Tristan is credible, as she is an activist of the worker’s union making her appealing to the workers. This is also shown by Pailine Roland who is mostly focused on established gender equality rather than improving the lives of the workers. This is shown in her letter when she states, “Woman is entitled to work as is Man, and to have productive, independent employment which will emancipate her from all dependence.” Roland uses the socialist movement as a catalyst to help develop her argument, and deliver it, while making it seem as she is part of the socialist movement, as she is truly more biassed towards establishing gender equality.
