Abuse of inhalants often begins as early as age 10-11. Inhalants are a large variety of products that can be found around the home or easily bought. Most can also be found in a workplace. These may include spray paint, markers, glue, and cleaning products, and they all contain dangerous substances that cause mind- altering properties when inhaled. Paragraph 1~ How are inhalants used? People can breathe in inhalants through their nose or mouth in a number of various ways. One method includes sniffing or snorting fumes from a container or dispenser. Glue bottles and Markers are commonly used for this method. A second technique is spraying aerosols such as computer cleaners directly into the nose or mouth. A third way is “huffing” from a chemical soaked rag in the mouth. A fourth method includes sniffing or inhaling fumes that have been sprayed into a paper or plastic bag. The four categories are known as solvents, aerosol sprays, gases, and nitrites. Solvents are liquids that become gases at room temperatures. These include industrial or household product like paint thinners, dry-cleaning fluids, gasoline, and lighter fluid, and also art and office products like felt-tip marker fluid, glue, and electronic contact cleaners. The aerosol sprays category is made up of household aerosol products like spray paint, hair or deodorant sprays, and vegetable oil sprays. Another category is gases and many are found in household or commercial products like butane lighters, propane tanks, and whipped cream aerosols. Other examples include products that are used for anesthesia or putting patients to sleep for surgery. They are called ether, chloroform, and nitrous oxide.
