Imagine being watched every moment of your life. It would be very absurd to live in a totalitarian system with no privacy, no emotions, no sex, and no relationships. The party controls every aspect of a person's life and they are not supposed to go against any of the rules. The main character, Winston Smith, a thirty-nine year old who is rewriting history is living this kind of life. In the novel, 1984, written by George Orwell, tells the life and the problems of Winton Smith within the party. Winton is threatened by the party throughout the book because he wants to stay human and keep his freedoms. He goes against the party because he does not believe in their actions. The party gives unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that something is dangerous and likely to cause a threat. In 1984, the children were fearless and; “it was almost normal for people over thirty to be frightened of their own children¨ (Orwell 24). Most older adults are usually in charge and make the rules. The roles are reversed because the children listen to the party. The adults are actually afraid and are in fear from their children because they work for the government as Spies. The children are brainwashed and report their family for any crime they may commit. Giving fear to the citizens. In the essay, “Disobedience as a Psychological and Moral Problem” by Erich Fromm argues how society will harm oneself without achieving freedom through disobedience. Fromm states that, “authoritarian conscience" which is the internalized voice of an authority whom we are eager to please and afraid of displeasing” (Fromm par 10). Most humans have a fear of being themselves. Everyone has a little chip on our shoulder that tells us not to say certain things or act a certain way. It is all a psychoanalytic thought process that all people have and can not be changed. Some people ignore this, but Winston could not. Fear builds up this pressure on a person's brain leading to being scared and unable to have a clear mind to process what is actually happening empowering the party to have complete control and domination.
The party manipulates the citizens to act powerless with telescreens. In the 1984, the party uses a two-way television called a telescreen that are placed in every citizens room. The telescreen is basically used as a tool for surveillance and gives the party authority by watching over the people. They are placed to take away privacy and watch the people at all
