Imagine a world where lives are on the line as physical torture commands the mind to follow the rules of a party. What would it feel like to live in a society where privacy does not exist? Psychological manipulation gaslights one into changing their behavior into following the manipulators. A sign of this manipulation includes actions not matching words and getting forced into isolation where one cannot see their own family or friends. A form of manipulation is conveyed when the citizens of Oceania are forced into attending the Two Minutes Hate. Every party member of Big Brother was demanded to view videos that mainly featured speeches attacking the party’s ideals. In secret, Winston supported these principles yet felt compelled to join the vicious rage. According to Winston, “The horrible thing about the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but, on the contrary, that it was impossible to avoid joining in” (Orwell 14). Winston’s mentality focused on joining what the others were doing, proving that he is aware of the manipulation but decides to contribute. It is a trick the party provides so everyone is forced into having the same mindset. Members of Big Brother were destroying themselves, for instance when Winston mentions, “And yet that rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp” (Orwell 14). Big Brother portrayed Emmanuel Goldstein as the living representation of the devil as members were instructed to have this extreme hatred for him even without an initial motive. The Two Minutes Hate caused citizens of Oceania to express hatred, which brainwashed the people’s minds to force everyone to think and hate the same people and things. Through the constant torture, citizens were kept frightened and manipulated to direct their hate at the Party’s enemies for protection. Winston, on the other hand, feared the party’s complete control on society and his own life. Continuing on, the party only cared to hold complete power and to force its followers into remaining loyal only to Big Brother. Families were weakened as children were manipulated to turn against their own family members.
