Mrs. Putnam the wife of Mr. Putnam admitted “ I sent my child- she should learn from tituba who murdered her sisters.’’ She conjured up the dead a type of witchcraft but she said “ I take it on my soul but who else may surely tell us what peon murdered my babies?” She messed around with witchcraft and she is pointing fingers saying “What have you done?” to Rebecca. Telling her basically how dare you do this. Little not so sweet and innocent Abigail.
parsonage. Even though the oppressed girls were among the main accusers during the trials, many historiographers believe the deranged girls parents, particularly Thomas Putnam and Reverend Samuel Parris, were inciting the situation with the girls and purposely influencing them to accuse certain people in the community they were not particularly fond of, to gain revenge or just out of spite. Cotton Mather was the minister of the Salem church, and truly believed in witchcraft. He had decided to investigate the unusual behavior of the children who belonged to John Goodwin, a Mason.
In the book “The Crucible” John Proctor and Thomas Putnam have many similarities but also have many differences. Proctor is a moral man who is very high minded while Putman is a very wealthy and influential landowner, both of these men play a major role in the Salem witch trials. They both possess a desire for power and influence. These men are both very respected in the town. Proctor and Putnam provide a certain level of ruthlessness in their pursuit of their life.
He views himself as a righteous man, acting in the name of God to cleanse the community of supposed witches. Putnam's strong belief in religious authority blinds him to the potential for manipulation and corruption within the
Document E shows us that thirty-two out of thirty-four accusers lived on the west side of town. This would mean that almost all of the accused lived on the east side of town. According to the note on Document E, the people living on the east side of town tended to be more affluent and had more political power. In the contrast, the accusers that lived on the west side had very little to no wealth, and they had no political power. This evidence helps explain the hysteria because it shows that loss of wealth and power can cause resentment.
In Witches: The Absolutely True Tale Of Disaster In Salem by Rosalyn Schanzer people in the town of Salem were Condemned for being witches. By the end of it all more than 200 people were accused and 20 were executed. Horridly they accused people from all ages, everyone from teenager to ancient was accused. But why? The Salem Witch Trials were caused by hysteria, popularity, and revenge.
Jackson Katz’s deficient diction portrays a fallacious idea that the majority of the victims of domestic violence are women with ideas that it’s a “men’s issue, and we are at fault” and “men are broken and need to be leaders, receive leadership training, and not sensitivity training.” Multiple empirical studies conclude that ¼ of all relationships have violence, and nonreciprocal violence in a relationship was more than 70%, initiated by females, and only less than 30%, initiated by male. People say that females are more affected as the statistics show that women get the brunt of the damage, but that 's because men are usually stronger and have the ability to inflict that much damage. From this, we can assume that the stereotype that women are
If anyone would have said anything to accuse her of being a witch after she admitted to sending Ruth to the woods that night, she would’ve been put on trial. However, Mrs. Putnam was very quick to ascertain that she did it only because she wanted to find out who murdered her babies. Both the fact that she had lost children and the fact that she denied practicing witchcraft, made her immaculate to being accused. Her innocence however, empowered her to accuse others of
It's so obvious that people are accusing others for vengeance and to get what they want. Abigail accused Elizabeth so she can be executed and she can have John Proctor. The Putnam’s accused George Jacobs because they know that George has hundreds of acres land. When a person is hanged, their land cannot be passed down and it has to be forfeited. This means that the land is ope for sale.
The feud between the Elizabeth and Abigail is still fresh in Act 1 of the play, and the tension behind it causes Abigail to use accusations of witchery against Elizabeth as she “thinks to take [her] place” as Proctor’s wife. She exploits the hysteria and irrationality of the situation for her own gain in personal issues. This is also evident in the relationship between the Putnams and the Nurses, however this dispute contrast is the first conflict as is has lasted much longer when in comparison. Due to a ‘land war’ and a disagreement regarding Thomas Putnam to run as a candidate for the Salem Ministry, the families lack respect for each other, showing great hostility that is exemplified as Mrs Putnam speaks to Rebecca Nurse “[with a growing edge of sarcasm]”. The witch hunts provide the perfect opportunity for the Putnams to achieve the 'upper hand’ and ‘win’ the dispute by accusing Rebecca Nurse of the “supernatural murder of Goody Putnam’s babies.”
Revenge At It’s Best “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”- Anonymous. As a matter of fact, the person who stated this quote just described the whole reason why the witchcraft trials started. Revenge is like a bug that you can’t get rid of that comes back continuously.
For example, Goody Osburn was accused of killing Mrs. Putnam’s children because she was with the Devil even though there was
This kind of manipulation and struggle has been going on ever since and continues heavily in current day. Everyone at one point in their life has said something false to benefit themselves. This same issue happens between Thomas Putnam and Reverend Parris. Thomas is a wealthy man who owns land in Salem and only wants to gain more. He wanted the land of the church but Parris got to it first so now he holds a grudge against him.
et al. 173). Mrs. Putnam doesn’t realise that the reason of her children’s deaths could just be her fault or health issues. So when the witch trials started she believed the deaths were caused by witchcraft. When Mr. and Mrs.Putnam visited Betty they noticed that their daughter was in the same state as Betty.
A few years later the Putnam’s petitioned the town in an effort to obtain political independence for the village, and the Porters opposed them. The arrival of Reverend Parris intensified the Putnam-Porter conflict. I think the two families accurately symbolize and correlate with the division between Salem Village and Salem Town. Joseph Putman who arrived in Salem in the Early 1640’s was a large land owner. As his family continued to expand, the Putman land was broken up into smaller and smaller tracts.
