Juan Jose de Los Reyes Martinez Amaro better known as El Pipila was born January 3, 1782, in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. During his birth there were many complications that led him to be born with physical disabilities He passed away July 25th, 1863 in Guanajuato, Mexico. It is said he died because of all the gases he inhaled while working as a miner in Guanajuato. He studied in his hometown, but in his youth went to work in the mines of Guanajuato. He started as a barretero and then later was put in charge of a group of barreteros. A barretero is someone who extracts coal from the very deep of a mine. He coated the door with tar and set in on fire with his torch. The fire weakened the door and limited the vision of the Spaniards allowing others to rush the door. They forced open the door and flooded into the Alhondiga de Granaditas. The Spaniards then opened fire with their rifles and killed many rioters. Some fought hand to hand. The rioters eventually shot the leader of the Spaniards and killed all of the Spaniards along with the refugees. They then seized the treasures that had been stored by the Spaniards. If it wasn’t for the courage of El Pipila, Hidalgo would not have taken Granaditas. This was a very important victory because it allowed them to take back control of Guanajuato. After everything was said and done Pipila went back to work as a miner in his native town. El Pipilas story spread like fire and encouraged peasants to riot. Years after the battle the Spaniards were driven out of Mexico. A statue dedicated to his bravery stands high above Guanajuato holding a torch. The statue holds a flaming torch on a hill on the edge of the city. At the base of the statue, it reads “there are still other Alhondigas to
