Villarreal History 1302 02/24/2017 “Native Reactions to the Invasion of America” by James Axtell In his article called “Native Reactions to the Invasion of America”, James Axtell discusses a very important problem of the American history – the treatment of Native Americans by the newcomers. Although Axtell does justify the position of the Natives in many cases, he does not believe that the newcomers were the only cause of the cultural schism between themselves and the locals.
Can dishonesty be valuable if it was used to achieve desirable outcomes? Is lying considered justified if it was involved in a dangerous situation? It is not always bad to lie. As children, we were continuously taught to be honest. We have grown to be implanted with the fact that lying is unacceptable but admissible.
According to Professor Douglas W. Portmore, a rule consequentialist, “holds that the rightness of an act depends not on the goodness of its consequences, but on whether or not it is in accordance with a certain code of rules, which has been selected for its good consequences” (Portmore, par 3), which provides that so long as rules prohibit lying then it would be wrong. As to when lying would be permitted, it would solely depend on if the lie adheres to specific rules that have been established. For instance, in the bible one of the Ten Commandments prohibits lying, therefore, with respect to the divine command belief, it would be pertinent to a rule consequentialist (who believes in the divine command theory). It also says lying is deadly, which is also shown in the Bible within the story of Adam and Eve, when the serpent lies to Eve, convincing her to consume the sacred fruit. In modern society, lying is a common practice. A person may lie protect themselves, or to gain something wanted. This may be due to religious diversity or the decay of respect in society.

Stephanie Ericsson begins her explorative essay, “The Ways We Lie,” with a personal anecdote of all the lies she fabricated in one day. She told her bank that a deposit was in the mail when it was not, told a client that the traffic had been bad when she was late for other reasons, told her partner that her day was fine when it was really exhausting, and told her friend she was too busy for lunch when she just was not hungry, all in the course of a day. She shifts from talking about herself to talking about everyone, claiming that all people lie, exaggerate, minimize, keep secrets, and tell other lies. But, like herself, most still consider themselves honest people. She describes a week in which she tried to never tell a lie; it was debilitating, she claims.
Lying has not been formally considered morally wrong or right regardless of the severity. Although it’s near impossible to go through a whole day without even stretching the truth once and decide which types of lies are okay or not. Stephanie Ericsson uses strong metaphors and personal experiences in “The Ways We Lie” to justify the use of our everyday lying. This unbiased essay will help readers decide whether it’s okay to lie on a daily basis. Ericsson starts out with saying she told the bank that her deposit was in the mail even though she hadn't written out the check (495).
Is lying just a human trait or do animals lie, too? Do animals have a sense of morality? Do they know right from wrong? what is right and what is wrong play important roles in the social interactions of animals, just as they do in ours. Many people believe animals don not lie, that they are immune to such human failings.

First, lying corrupts the most important quality of being human: your ability to make free, rational choices is deprived of you the moment you tell a lie. Each lie you tell contradicts the part of you that gives you moral worth. Second, lies deprive others of their freedom to choose rationally. When your lie leads people to decide other than they would have had they known the truth, you have harmed their human dignity and autonomy.
Why do people lie? Lying is when a person does not tell the truth or does not tell all the facts. There are many different opinions and maybe even many different excuses of why people lie. One thing is right thought and that is, lying is considered morally wrong in our society. In the United States Army, lying is considered on of the most immoral actions a soldier or anyone else can take towards the army, especially if its lying to an NCO.
Lying is Never the Right Thing to Do There are many things wring in the world today. People lie, sue over anything, steal, and break things on purpose. However, the biggest issue in this world is lying. People will literally lie about almost anything.
“Lying is bad,” the common phrase children hear from their parents when refusing to admit they stole a cookie from the cookie jar. The same applies to many other situations, such as thievery, betrayal, lies, and more. Constantly we are told that taking part in such things is wrong. Yet, what about that man that just stole a hundred dollars to buy food for his starving family? What judgement befalls on the girl that just lied to save her best friend’s reputation?
Aristotle believed no general rule on lying was possible, because anybody who was ok with lying could never be believed. The philosophers St. Augustine as well as St. Thomas Aquinas and Immanuel Kant, said no to all lying. According to all three, there are no circumstances in which one may ethically lie. Even if the only way to protect one’s self is to lie, it is never ethically ok to lie even in the face of murder, torture, or any other hardship. Each of these philosophers gave several arguments against lying, all in agreeance with each other.
