Adam Grant's Essay 'But You Re Oprah'

305 Words2 Pages
Adam Grant, a conservative writer who wrote the essay "Unless You're Oprah" (2016) recommends that "for most people, "be yourself" is actually terrible advice" (4). The author exemplifies this opinion by mentioning the author, A. J. Jacobs; Jacobs spent a few weeks "trying to be totally authentic" (6) and his final verdict portrayed negativity to his true self. Grant provides details about authenticity in order to prevent people from being authentic; he invokes, "Rather than changing from the inside out, you bring the outside in" (16). Adam Grant addresses people who have been told to "be themselves" by providing different tactics to be sincere; He says "[People] want you to live up to what comes out of your mouth" (20) perhaps people should.
