I’m writing to you to address key issues within rural and remote health workforce. We all know that this is a long standing issue involving all key elements recruiting, training, supporting and retaining. Likewise, it is essential to be focusing on leadership, retention and productivity as three key elements.
Rural and remote practice is unique, in both environment and health issues, as well as challenging it is also very rewarding. We promote rural practice, as a rewarding and exciting career path. This process needs to begin at the undergraduate level and other education incentives to bring health professionals to regional areas.
Development of leadership within our nurses is a cornerstone. Nurses at all levels need to be equip and enabled to become effective leaders. Providing our nurses with the best possible start ensuring the skillset and orientation not only for graduates prepares them for the challenges they may face. We need to ensure that nurses that have just came to rural practice receive the appropriate support within the workplace. Nurse management is crucial in this avenue to make sure that there is appropriate mentoring and creating a positive practice environment.
Full use of all roles and appropriate skill mix enables full use and autonomy of all staff. Opportunities for innovation would further strengthen and encourage staff to be productive and strength dialogue between employers and managers.
