Adelaide Labille-Guiard in FOCUS

Introduction
A female artist who affected my life was Adelaide Labille-Guiard, as she provided the rather interesting painting of a “Self-Portrait with Two Pupils, 1785” (Brooklyn Museum, n.d.) which became historically recognized. The sensitivity of fairness and equality regarding women has been something that touches my spirit deeply. Her painting skill and talent opened up the channels for women in art to gain some respect among the male counterparts during a period of troubled times and the “French Revolution”.

Her position and relationship with authorities and governing bodies presented firm rejection while a small part allowed acceptance to only some female artists. “Although her portrait practice did not regain its former profitability, she was an active participant in the debates unleashed by the Revolution over women’s access to education and financial support” (Brooklyn Museum, n.d., para. 1).
The recognition came from her successful piece known historically as “Self-Portrait with Two Pupils, 1785” (Brooklyn Museum, n.d.). This acceptance into the Académie Royale in Paris had opened up doors to the governing powers that would make use of her abilities and talent for detailed work in oil paintings. This had eventually provided several paintings of notable people with historical importance throughout time. The majority of her work dealt with authorities and people surrounding governing entities of prominence during a historical period.
