1. How have arguments about - and rationales for - the federal role in funding educational institutions changed over time? In the 1700s the government provided land for educational growth. The land could be used for building of a university, or the land could be sold to help provide funding for expansion.
One option, Policy A, would be to create a 0.25% increase in the state income tax for Oklahomans so public schools would receive pay raises to bring them to a similar level of surrounding states. This would keep teachers from leaving for surrounding states because of pay. They would be able to attract more qualified individuals into teaching because they will receive a better salary than they would have otherwise. This policy would be a taxation policy because it is increasing taxes to increase the pay of teachers in public schools.
One of the biggest flaws is standardized testing has not improved student achievement. " Despite using them for several decades, policymakers and educators do not yet know how to use test-based incentives to consistently generate positive effects on achievement and to improve education." So if these tests aren’t improving our students, then why do we have them? I believe we need to change the tests or improve them somehow so that we do see some sort of improvement. Tests are very crucial to education because they show what a student knows, if we took these tests out completely then we would have no idea if students are improving or declining.
Standardized Tests are ineffective because they don’t measure what is important. Other people may think that we don’t take enough tests. The text stated, “We need a lot of tests to figure out how smart people are getting.” This all may be true, but, parents are complaining that the teachers are “teaching to the test”. Other people may think that we don’t take enough tests while some parents are complaining about all of the testings.
This is a key part in schools today because it’s enforcing a higher bar of achievement for teachers and students (Catapano, 2018). Implementing standards into a school system that are internationally benchmarked means all states and countries have a way of measuring their academic performance. They can use this also as a tool to compile scores and understand the weaknesses to improve students’ knowledge. This provides teachers with various ways to assess their students more frequently through observations and informal assessments to understand the student’s comprehension level of the lesson material. It will help the teachers to strive to improve her test scores by adapting lesson materials to the needs of each
There are public schools all over the world and those in public schools are not getting the proper education that they need. It seems public schools only provide the public with the bare minimum. This bare minimum can become very discouraging to parents, students and the entire public community in which the school is. Most Supreme Court rulings agree that school districts across the nation, and across the world, really only need to provide the bare minimum legally. This present an issue, if the professionals are only supposed to give the bare minimum then they themselves will be given the bare minimum.
Clearly, the introduction of public education has had immense impact on American society. With it 's establishment historically, came a substantial accrual in the overall education level of the citizens of the United States. Recently, public education has become perceived as being the “standard” way to educate students. However, the history of public education is rather brief when compared with other education methods, there are numerous misconceptions regarding the quality of public education, and there are many detrimental effects on individuals and families, which are often overlooked in light of a handful of touted benefits.
Even after the bell rings, there is constant work happening to keep the school district running. The Council of Learning definitely hit this point home for me. In their twenty page document on student progress, they not only explained the importance of academic progress but the importance of pushing for a safer school climate for their students. Outside of the report they addressed the difficulty of excessive testing requirements and how it is putting down students. Only having had the perspective of a student, it was reassuring to see educators seeing a problem and actively seeking a way to fix the problem.
Our educational system is failing us. The United States of America is supposed to be the “greatest” country in the world but statistics are showing that our government/educational system is failing us; children/young adults of the nation. Being a student of a middle ranked school in Arizona, I personally have had a first-hand feel for how good and/or bad teaching affects students. Just in high school I have had teachers that would just assign websites as our lesson and even teachers that sit at their desk for the whole hour; don’t even go over the mindset, homework, and maybe only show one problem so that we’ll know what the homework will be like. Until sophomore year I didn’t even know the differences between you’re, your, too, and to.
Compulsory Education Most, if not all of us, are aware of the fact we are required to go to school-the reason behind this are the controversial compulsory education laws. There have many many different forms of compulsory education in past times. In the Roman societies it was expected of young people to study under someone who had an education. Whenever attending school became mandatory in the United States there was a lot of controversy. On one hand, you had people who loved the idea of their kids having to go to school for a set number of years and the state providing it.
My first reaction to having to read True Education by Ellen G. White was “oh great, I have to read another Ellen White book.” Throughout my life I was preached at about how Ellen White said such and such, meaning if I do not follow what she says I am a rebelious and unrighteous person. With this being said, I am glad that I was able to put my negative thoughts aside and dig deep into the topics, because after reading the book I have gained some new ideas and perspectives on how to go about educating in the classroom. However, I am only going to focus on the few that really stuck out to me. Some of them being able to comprehend the nature of human beings and their purpose, using several different teaching tactics, and the need for teachers and parents to work together.
There is a third reason which is the Most important reason, is to get a great picture of the cultural diversity of the United States of America. Knowledge of others, their cultures, their sciences and way of life, is useful for learning about a new culture. Some cultures have good qualities and bad recipes, or perhaps do not fit the nature of our lives. For example, my presence in America has made me learn a lot of American cultures that if I find them in my country and may be useful to me or in raising my children such as opening the door to the person walks behind me, honestly I like this behavior which I miss this in my country. In general, the idea of quoting the culture that suits our societies may help us to develop from the reality of our lives.
Many aspects of public education are problematic. For example, the usefulness in grading systems (other than IB schools) are questionable. It cages up creativity and makes the students unmotivated. Also many times the grading system is just wrong. When students write something and give it to the teacher to grade sometimes they can get a horrible grade.
Education is a huge issue that not only affects kids and their parents, but their community as well. Schools teach young kids to become the next generation of engineers, technicians, and political leaders, working towards creating a better future for their country and their community. Teachers have the unique job of creating the future leaders of the world, and preparing them for both college and life beyond, by putting a special push towards math and science, the so-called “foundation” of our society. The hard truth is, no one can be anything they want to be. Some people are simply not cut out to be engineers, doctors, or psychologists.
