A friend of mine, who is African-American, was adopted by a Caucasian couple. The parents did not see their difference in race as a problem. Family and friends worried the child would lose her African-American culture due to her surroundings, so they brought this to the parents’ attention. The parents did not want the child to lose her ethnicity, so they adapted to meet their child’s needs. In fact, race used to be a very large problem, especially in America. Race would be the deciding factor in any action, whether it is going to the bathroom or where one could work. An individual’s race should not determine the race of the child they wish to adopt because this limits the lives that can be saved. A law that was made in 1994, but revised in 1996 states that “it is against the law to prohibit an adoption or delay an adoption based solely on the race of the adoptive parents or …show more content…
There is an easy solution; the parents can explain to their child that they are adopted, so that they will understand why they are different. Also, they can raise their child with people around them that show the same physical characteristics as them. For example, the children could have friends that look like they do or the parents could adopt in two or more to help them grow up together. Parents that may not be social or mentally ready to raise a child that is a different race has so many different ways of preparing or getting ready. For one, they could do research on the internet and learn as much about that culture as possible. Also, they could ask around to other people that are of that race for some guidance in what you need to know or what you need to take care of the child. If it be medically, physically, or mentally.
