Race in America: What Children Should Know
There are many issues in America today surrounding race and religion, despite this many parents still decline to educate their kids on race, because it is too uncomfortable for them to talk about to their children. I, Janelle Monae will go over 3 reasons in this essay about why children and teens should be educated about race. Race, which is considered a taboo in today’s society, should be talked about more and earlier in people’s lives. Firstly, it would help children to be more aware about people that look different than them. Secondly, it would help for when the children grow up for them to be more tolerant, and lastly it would allow them to stand up against racial injustices in the world and have empathy and consider others feelings in those situations.
Firstly, children of all races should be educated about other races to be more aware of people that are different than them. For example I was once asked why I had brown skin by a little kid and I couldn’t help but wonder if the kid’s parents would have explained to him what it means to see people who have different skin tones he would have been more aware of why I looked different than him. If children were told about people of other races and how they are just like everyone else, then maybe they would grow up to be more tolerant to other races and avoid using racial stereotypes and slurs to talk about people different from themselves. If children are not explained this at a young age especially in a non-diverse environment chances are that since they have never seen people of different races before they will make fun of them and will know only the way those people are portrayed on Television and in magazines which isn’t necessarily true about those people of different
