The rise of American race relations evolved in the 1980s due to the progress and persistent challenges, there were many evolutions in this period for example changes in civil rights, politics, and social attitudes, but also struggles with inequality and discrimination. During the 1980s there was an increase in political participation from African Americans, important figures such as Harold Washington who was the first African American mayor of Chicago in 1983, another important figure was Jesse Jackson who was the first African American to run for president in 1984, bringing problems such as racial justice to the national politics (Lecture). Furthermore, new policies were implemented in education and employment, which pointed to the inequalities
White Privilege in America Recently in America racial tension has increased because events that’s have been occurring across the country. Across the United States (U.S.) black men have been killed by law enforcement and this has sparked protest in its aftermath. The media has started to give more time to these problems so more Americans have learned about them. This has started a conversation on different social issues that include the dominant culture, social privilege in the U.S. As a young black man this has affected me directly.
Conflict theory has been used to describe the discrepancies in power and distribution of resources among the dominate group and the subordinate groups. Racial inequalities and racism among the groups has played a big role in the concept of conflict theory. Conflict theory examines the rising conflict between the dominate group, or white ruling class, and racial minorities, such as African Americans. This conflict and inequality among the races may be a reason why 20.2 percent of African American males die by homicide. In fact, African Americans are six times as likely as whites to be killed by homicide.
Past research indicates that there has been racial and income inequality in Los Angeles for decades. More specifically, there has been racial and income disparities in quality of life and access to resources. Blacks and Latinos have a lower quality of life and access to fewer resources than Whites. Do people discriminate others to hurt them or they do not realize what their actions are doing? Racial discrimination is when a person is treated less favorably than another person in a similar situation because of their race, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin or immigrant status. One of the biggest discrimination in this country is racial discrimination towards Latinos and people of color. Racial discrimination has become a part of everyday life in America. We have to stop this hatred in our country because this country is based on freedom, peace, and home of immigrants.
Americans today tend to believe that racial profiling is not an effective way to enforce the law. Many people think that policemen stop them for their race ethnicity. Common sense is that the police officers stop people who look suspicious. People do not understand that police officers detaining people are part of their community duties and are not necessarily based on ethnicity. People misunderstand racial profiling and they create a controversial issue of it.
In every country social issues can always be found there, through travels of the media and the world. These social issues comes in a range from unequal rights to violent problems. Essentially these social issues are at present and personal. Entirely these social issues are very significant because people have the knowledge of understanding these problems that are impacting others’ lives and must be addressed, however the issue that I want to discuss is race between the white and black society. I believe that race has a lot negative effects in every country especially America.
In my opinion I believe that most politically charged relevant and divisive would be race and minorities in the American political culture. When it comes to race it would appear that we are a divided country and have been for some time. Looking back during the early 60’s with the civil rights movement and in the early 70’s with the women’s movement we have always struggled with minorities and race. Even today race plays a huge factor in the society on all sides of the fence. Although many don’t always want to admit that.
A problem I would like to solve is the prevalent racial inequality in the United States today. African Americans and Hispanics are the most underserved racial groups in American society. About 45% of African Americans and 46% of Hispanics live in episodic poverty (defined as poverty lasting less than three years). Over 15% of African Americans are unemployed, and they make up 40% of the prison population in America. This is a shocking statistic, as only 13% of the United States ' population is African American.
As we reach the 21st century we would think that racial inequality has completely ended yet we continue to see much discrimination. Racial inequality continues to exist in the world and here in the United States it is a very controversial topic. Today, we watch the television and almost everyday we hear news about some type of crime or situation which regards race issues. In other words, racism is still a topic that we experience in a daily basis and continues to haunt this country. By analyzing some recent racial inequality news we can find out what continues to make this issue such a controversial topic.
