To get on the general election ballot without going through an established party, one has two options to choose from. The first is to run as an independent candidate. An independent candidate has to gather a certain number of signatures on a nominating petition from voters who are registered and qualified. If the independent candidate gathers enough votes, then they are put onto the general election ballot. Often times, the number needed is five or ten times as much as the minimum. The second option, is to form a new party. When the new party is established, the same process must be repeated as an independent candidate.
