Energy drinks come with a lot of health risks, over 20,000 trips to the emergency department are associated with energy drinks use every year in the US alone. [4] While energy drinks can reduce mental fatigue, and improve measures of brain function, such as memory, concentration and reaction time, they do not extend the time it takes for runners to become exhausted and that it does not improve strength. A few of the health risk associated with energy drinks include, but not limited to.
• Insomnia: Energy drinks do a good job of keeping people awake, but when abused, they can cause some people to miss sleep altogether. This lack of sleep impaired functioning and can be dangerous to drive or operate heavy machinery.[5]
• Headaches and Migraines: Too many energy drinks can lead to severe headaches, especially when experience caffeine withdrawals.[5]
• Increased Anxiety: Those with 2 different genetic variations in their adenosine receptors are prone to feeling increased anxiety when consuming caffeinated beverages such as energy drinks. Larger doses of caffeine can even spur on full-blown panic attacks.[8]
• Type 2 Diabetes: Because many energy drinks are also very high in sugar, they can eventually wear out the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, which leads to type 2 diabetes. [8]
