During the colonization period in Asia, Spain trying to find a new route to the Spice Islands, Ferdinand Magellan disembarked upon the Philippines on March 16, 1561. Upon arriving at the Philippines, friars and priests started converting the natives to Christians. Also, realizing the beneficial outcomes of the galleon trades, the Spanish became the middleman between South China and Mexico. Throughout the colonization of the Philippines, the Spanish benefited economically from the Philippines but hindered the natives socially and through taxation. Ultimately the negatives outweigh the positives because being strong economically is not greater than losing cultural identity and the Church bringing the natives into debt. Two main ways that Spain was detrimental to Filipinos was by improper taxation and the friars and priests enforcing religion, language, and social norms. One way that Spain aided the Philippines was through the galleon trade.
In the Philippines, the galleon trade caused great trade and greater profits for the Spaniards in the Philippines, which benefited both the natives and the colonizers. The galleon trade in Manila caused Chinese merchants to migrate to the Philippines and for the Filipinos and to have huge profits.
