In the novel, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louie is tortured by being dehumanized and isolated while being a POW. Throughout the book, Louie is being treated poorly by his captors, but resisted giving up. One example is in chapter 17, Louie was being transported to a camp and is put on the ground. The text states, “Louie said something to Phil and immediately felt a boot kick into him...” (page 181).
The biography, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is about the life of Louis (Louie) Zamperini, a POW surviver during World War 2. The book has a multitude of heroes. Some demonstrate heroism throughout the book, while others evolve into heroes towards the end. Then there is this hero who puts his life in danger to save people he doesn't even know—Louis, our protagonist. He sacrifices himself to save others continuously.
The Amazing Louis Zamperini Louis Zamperini was captured by the Japanese during World War 2 and had to fight for his life to survive. Although Louie was a troublemaker when he was younger, he always ran to his fullest. He was one of the top runners and got to go to the Olympics. The book Unbroken was written by Laura Hillenbrand and my two traits about Louie are rebellious and determined. I want the readers who read this to know what Louis had go through and that nobody should ever go through that.
The book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand demonstrates that after suffering for a long period of time, one must overcome their past sorrows to move ahead in the present. Louie enlists in the army air corps and becomes a bombardier. When Zamperini’s B-24 went down in the shark-infested Pacific Ocean, he and two crewmates (pilot Russell Allen “Phil” Phillips and Francis “Mac” McNamara) had to survive with only the supplies that had been stashed in the pockets of a pair of small life rafts. Louie and his crewmate Phil were able to survive the 47 days at sea, only then to be captured by the Japanese and eventually sent to a brutal POW camp where he was beaten, starved and overworked. Louie then survives once more despite all of the misery and torment

This story takes place mostly in the Pacific Ocean and many of prisoner-of-war camps in Japan. This book is about a man named Louie Zamperini that was an agitator at a young age that had also trained to beat the four-minute-mile, but decided to put everything on hold when World War II transpired. After Louie enlisted in the army, he served as a B-24 Liberator bombardier, but as he was traveling over the Pacific Ocean, his plane was shot down by another aircraft.
Laura Hillenbrand’s choice to write Unbroken in third person benefits the book. After tieing with Lash for the Olympic qualifying 5,000m race and making the Olympic team, “... Sylvia returned from work the next day, the house was packed with well-wishers and newsmen. Louie’s 12 year old sister, Virginia, clutched one of Louie’s trophies and told reporters of her plans to be the next great Zamperini runner.”
In the Article “Excerpts from Unbroken” By Laura Hillenbrand POWs in Japanese were made “Invisible” during their imprisonment because they treated them terribly. According “Every man in camp was thin, many emaciated… Rations weren’t nearly enough…Unheated,drafty rooms.” (Hillenbrand,Part 2) This shows that the POWs were treated terribly by the Japanese , making them have a harsh life in their imprisonment. This proves that the Japanese made the Pows invisible during their harsh bad imprisonment.
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is the triumphant story of an Olympic track medalist turned World War II hero. Within the biography, the characters are often put into gruesome settings that enhance both the conflict and characterization. This element is often enriched by the author’s diction. Hillenbrand’s choice of words to describe the setting throughout the text have the ability to make the conflict seem more intense and vivid. Within the story, the protagonist, Louie Zamperini, is put through rigorous events.
Laura Hillenbrand’s narrative Unbroken, tells the story of Louis Zamperini, former olympic miler. The story begins with an explanation of Louie’s malicious childhood, where he often resorted to thievery and cruel pranks. When Louie entered high school, his mischievous acts would slowly diminish, and he would develop a new found love for running. In his high school years, Louie became a sensational runner, known as the Torrance Tornado. His development led to a running scholarship, and furthered into olympic achievement.

He started as a young troublemaker until he discovered his passion for running in high school. That very passion led him to compete in the Olympics. Later he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, a brave decision that would change his life.
Barriers throughout someone’s lifetime could shatter them, or help them to build and become a better person. Either way, it is a decision one makes on their own. Some people’s hardships are worse than others, but that does not mean it was not tough for them to handle. Conflicts could even help shape the person going through a tough time. Simone Biles was determined to become stronger from her challenges, mentally and physically.
Adversity can take us by surprise, but everyone at some point in life experiences it. The way our personal identity can be shaped is through our phases of adversity. The experiences of dealing with difficulties can shape the way we view life and the actions that will show our persona. When we persevere adversity and obstacles it shows our reputation and our true type of identity. In the play Hamlet, William Shakespeare, illustrates the way Hamlet, as well as other characters, deal with adversity through the types of motives they are seeking.
The Roman poet, Horace once said, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant”. Horace argues that difficult circumstances critically impact the development of one’s character. Although some may argue that character will reveal itself regardless if adversity is present, I agree with Horace’s perspective, adversity determines one's potential capabilities, strengthens personal values, and provides a feeling of self-worth. Sure, there are cases in which prosperous circumstances lead to internal development.
The determination to live comes from human nature. But the urge of giving up when we come across a difficult problem is also a part of human nature. There a few people in this world that have the characteristics of resilience. As author Kendra Cherry describes them, "People that are able to keep their cool have what psychologists call resilience, or an ability to cope with problems and setbacks" (Source A; Cherry, 1). An example of someone who has the characteristics of resilience is a bombardier name Louis (Louie) Zamperini.
In our life, there are periods of challenges that we must face, but the real challenge is how we grow and learn from overcoming them. Being naive children, we believed that life was simplistic and effortless. Well, we were wrong, we can only yearn for life to be easy. Growing up, we continue to face countless hurdles that only get bigger and bigger. My life, in particular, has been filled with numerous up and downs.
