Humans are constantly being tested with difficult pursuits which they may surrender to or use their willpower to overcome. We often choose the latter. When one is unkind or disrespectful to you, it is human instinct to allow that disrespect make you feel insecure and ultimately cause deep anger. People tend to be victims to their own misfortune more often than they are survivors of the difficulty they face. But it is important to consider the strength that can be gained from conquering adversity with confidence. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s narrative “My Kinsman, Major Molineux”, he depicts the good that can come from conquering such adversity and disrespect. During Robin’s second encounter at the Inn where he asks about the location of Major Molineux, the narrator states, “...and no sooner was he beyond the door, than he heard a general laugh…” (Paragraph 20). This laughter repeats throughout each of Robin’s encounters, but even by Robin himself when Hawthorne writes, “...and he sent forth a shout of laughter that echoed through the street, -- every man shook his sides, every man emptied his lungs, but Robin’s shout was the loudest there” (Paragraph 80). Hawthorne repeats the laughter after each of Robin’s encounters in order to depict Robin’s growth throughout his endeavor to find Major Molineux. Despite being mocked and laughed at countless times, Robin ignores the laughter and reacts with positivity rather than becoming angry at those who insult him. Hawthorne uses the repeated laughter to give Robin repeated opportunities to overcome the insults he receives in a graceful way. When Hawthorne incorporates Robin laughing at the end of the narrative, he uses this to demonstrate Robin’s achievement maturity as he is able to understand that most people in the city do not view Major Molineux the same way Robin used to.
