Then a small hole opened and the duo raced through it and Pollard was less than an inch away from hitting one of the horses and injuring his leg. Then Seabiscuit led until Kayak, also owned by Howard, pulled even with Seabiscuit. Then Seabiscuit looked Kayak in the eye and sped off alone toward the finish line.

In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Liesel Meminger overcomes her lack of education and her different beliefs on Jewish people. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet both overcome the obstacle of not being able to be together because of the feud between their families. Harran and Elisabeth B.Leyson, Leon has to learn that he can’t just wait for his problems to go away and not do anything, to overcome his adversity he needs to work hard, not lose hope, and stay determined. This helps him to survive the Nazi oppression because he never gave up so he kept striving forward. Unbroken, is a story about Louis Zamperini who has has survived many war battles. Louis has gone to war and survived, then was called back to keep fighting; however, this time, their plane crashed, and he landed in the middle of the ocean on a raft he had with him. Throughout all of this, Louis was brave and resilient to be able to stay alive in the ocean for 40 days. In Unbroken, by Hillenbrand, Louis had fought to stay alive after a rough patch in his life, and shows the audience that overcoming obstacles makes people better and stronger in the end.
In other words, the more difficult the end is to attain, the better the story. I agree with Miller that much of life is about the person you are molded into on the way to the goal. It’s about character transformation, and not settling for less than the best person you can become. Yet with this in mind, I believe it is important to know that living a better story and overcoming hardship is not going to be a smooth ride. Suffering and difficulty may give you the chance to grow as an individual but it seems to always be easier said than done.
When he came under Charles Howard’s ownership in 1936, Seabiscuit was anything but a thoroughbred great; he was vicious, quarrelsome, and severely underweight. Howard’s new trainer, Tom Smith, finally got the horse calmed down and retrained him to have good temperament and run the way he was supposed to. Red Pollard rode Seabiscuit for a majority of his races after coming under Smith’s training, and the two youngsters developed a deep bond. He was considered the greatest racehorse on the West Coast and was a serious contender in any race. News spread fast, and quickly the whole United States called for a match between Seabiscuit and War Admiral, the greatest racehorse on the East Coast.
