Another thing that was transformed by the Industrial Revolution was the change in the consumer market. Originally advertisement was limited to the local market. Goods were advertised either in person or in local papers and pamphlets. After the Civil War, newspapers for larger areas were used as advertisements. Companies had celebrities wear and endorse their items. Billboards were posted near roads to catch traveler’s attention. Companies went on to do customer surveys in ways of making their items more desirable. Because of the expansion of railroad tracks, companies were able to ship their items to more consumers. Because of the increase in consumer demand, many businesses saw it as a way of making money. Many times, making money consisted of aggressive selling, as well as poor working conditions, and bad business practices. One of the bad business practices included monopolization. Companies would undersell their items until it ran other businesses out of business, thus being the only company available to sell a certain product or provide a certain service. Another questionable act was varying charges to ship items, especially those that relied on railroads to receive or send those items. Smaller towns tended to suffer many of the price gouging that companies committed.Other bad business practices included the detrimental effects to the environment.When companies were drilling for oil, soil in that area became polluted. Railroads and other machines that used coal created gas and smoke that was harmful to the environment and for humans alike.
