After looking deeper into different political issues, I have found that I have different viewpoints on different topics. For example, some of the topics I lean toward the conservative point of view whereas other subjects I agree with the liberal opinion. Overall, I agree mostly with the liberal sides of the arguments. The three topics I thought were most interesting and decided to focus on are the death penalty, euthanasia and physician assisted suicide, and affirmative action. I agree with the liberal stance on the topic of the death penalty. Some of the issues I see with the death penalty include the murder of innocent people, the death penalty being cruel and unusual punishment, and the death penalty isn’t benefiting the homicide rate. …show more content…

The last topic I have decided to dig deeper into and find my opinion about is affirmative action. I do not believe affirmative action is necessary and I think that hiring of individuals should be based purely on talent, experience and who is the best person for the job overall, regardless of race. I believe that we all can be successful and you should not be defined by race. As I was researching this topic I found it very interesting that many people said that affirmative action is “reverse discrimination” because it gives the minorities the upper hand in hiring processes which still makes hiring based on race. Also, we have been trying to use affirmative action for quite a while now and it doesn’t seem to be making a difference in ending racism or discrimination. I also think that affirmative action could very easily result in stereotypes. For example, when someone sees someone who is a minority receiving employment they may assume that they aren’t qualified for the position and that their race got that person hired. However, without affirmative action, stereotypes are less likely to occur, having a greater chance of minimizing racism and …show more content…

The research and understanding of both viewpoints of these topics helped me to be more aware of the different points of view and understand that you do not have to always agree with the liberal side or always agree with what the conservative position. Although most of the topics I see eye to eye with the liberal standpoint, other times I agree with what the conservatives have to say.
