The values and norms of a definite form of political Islam were transmitted to Afghani children through books supplied by United States government. The books were supplied to Afghani children in a program that was geared towards spreading the Anti-Soviet uprising during the Cold War (Braithwaite, 2011). The books contained images and texts full of violent images and provocative Islamic teachings. They also included images of guns, bullets and soldiers.
The United States government developed the idea as a strategy to spread its anti-communism gospel. To accomplish this objective, the U.S. government used influence to gain the permission to supply books to Afghani schools. This scenario has created a huge divide based on the issues. Opponents and critics of the Afghani book supply program argue that tax money cannot be used to fund the supply of books that promote religion to Afghanistan. They argue that the U.S constitution prohibited the government from using tax money to promote religion.
The books were written at the University of Nebraska in Ohama and its Center for Afghanistan Studies under the funding of the Agency for International Development. After publication and printing, they were then smuggled into Afghanistan with the help of regional military leaders. Once the books got to Afghanistan, they were then distributed to different areas of the country by United States relief workers who distributed to schools.
The books program mainly served the interests of the United States. Through the books, they managed to recruit Muslims to their capitalist side of the cold war. As a result, Afghanis turned against the Soviets in a bid to drive them from their country. The drawings and illustrations contained in the books that the US supplied to Afghanis ignited their hatred of the foreigners in their land.
