Although Rex Walls was not always an admirable father and role model, he did make an essential point while teaching his daughter, Jeannette, how to swim. In life, not everything comes without resistance. As Jeannette Walls describes throughout her life story, sometimes people are forced to face hardships that make them question their whole life. However, as seen in her book, it is important to learn to take those hardships and use them to shape one’s future for the better.

In Of Mice And Men, by John Steinbeck, many people suffer, but George suffers the most, more than anybody. Even though Candy suffers because his dog died and he has no more friends or family, I believe that George suffered the most in of mice and men because he had to kill his best friend and he gets punished for whatever Lennie does wrong since they are tied at the hip. George suffers more than anybody in the story, even candy. Even though Candy had his best friend killed he was not there to see the dog die.
In the 1930’s the stock market crashed and affected many people in America. In the novel “Of mice and men” by John Steinbeck he expresses a lot of what happened. The underdogs define powerfulness because of the setting and their place in society. A way steinbeck got his ideasfor powerlessness is the background.
One of Lennie's greatest fears is being on George's bad side. To me, this quotation sounds like a goodbye. George is telling Lennie that in their entire friendship, he was never mad at him. He wants to let Lennie feel loved and that he never did anything to get on his bad side. These are his last words to Lennie because of George bringing the gun with him to meet Lennie.

In the novel, When the Legends Die, Tom faces the struggle to find out who he truly is and where he really belongs. After his parents die, Tom faces a life in the civilized world. In the civilized world, Tom lives the school life and the bronc riding life but still faces the struggle of finding himself. Tom attends school but refuses to adapt to that life. He escapes the school and runs back into the mountains.
The novel, The Old Man and the Sea, is a story about an old man, Santiago, who experienced great adversity but did not give up. The author, Ernest Hemingway, describes how an old man uses his experience, his endurance and his hopefulness to catch a huge marlin, the biggest fish he has ever caught in his life. The old man experienced social-emotional, physical, and mental adversity. However, despite the overwhelming challenges, he did not allow them to hold him back but instead continued to pursue his goal of catching a fish with determination. Santiago’s character, his actions and the event in the novel reveals an underlying theme that even when one is facing incredible struggles, one should persevere.
John Steinbeck used his writing to emphasize the importance of the rural and lower classes in the United States, and through doing so he helped shape the future of American literature. John Steinbeck: A Literary Light in the Great Depression " The ancient commission of the writer has not changed. He is charged with exposing our many grievous faults and failures, with dredging up to the light our dark and dangerous dreams for the purpose of improvement"(“John Ernst Steinbeck”). Said by John Steinbeck as he accepted the Nobel Prize for Literature, this quote illustrates perfectly the goals and ideals Steinbeck held himself to in his writing. Steinbeck pursued above all to give the common folk of the Great Depression a voice; an endeavor that grants him a place with the great writers of America.
Finally, curley’s wife’s innocence and nativity is presented through her dream and death. From an early age the men in her life consistently let her down, tearing her apart piece by piece. She tells Lennie about a guy who said, “he was gonna put me [her] in the movies.” Like many Americans at the time she believed in the American dream and had a dream of her own. However, unlike George and Lennie hers was shut down and had no possibility of ever happening.
After church, Makenna and Jacob, (Makenna’s cousin), and I decided to go swimming in the lake to cool down. The deep blue water sparkled in the afternoon heat and there were people cooking hamburgers and corn on barbecues in the shade while younger kids played in the shallow part of the water. There was a floating platform in the middle of the lake with a twisting white slide down one side and two high dives on the other.
