The black churches are active in both roles, the priestly and prophetic. The priestly roles deals with worship and maintaining a spiritual lively hood in the ministry, while the prophetic focuses upon articulating an essential word of God’s judgment. The Dialectical Model indicates that the black church functions more as an institution with the attitudes of survival, instead of the prophetic churches of liberation. The other-worldly versus this-worldly is a continual dialog on how the black churches feel and act as believers toward the world. The other-worldly aspect is the mindset of heaven views, with concerns on eternal life or the world beyond, but it abandons the thoughts toward political and social concerns, which is this-worldly aspect.
In the African American church, no matter the size, there is a strong sense of identity. This is evident by a “us” versus “them” mentality. However, some churches are able to break the mold by growing to become a Shepherding-Size Congregation. This church has between 50 and 150 active members.

Allen Dwight Callahan’s The Talking Book: African Americans and the Bible connects biblical stories and images to the politics, music and, religion, the book shows how important the Bible is to black culture. African Americans first came to know the Bible because of slavery and at that time the religious groups would read it to them instead of teaching them by letting them encounter it for themselves. Later the Bibles stories became the source of spirituals and songs, and after the Civil War motivation for learning to read. Allen Callahan traces the Bible culture that developed during and following enslavement. He identifies the most important biblical images for African Americans, Exile, Exodus, Ethiopia, and Emmanuel and discusses their recurrence and the relationship they have with African Americans and African American culture.
In this paper, I will be exploring the key ideas that Father Paul Holmes highlights in his book A Pastor’s Toolbox. Father Holmes divides his book into fifteen chapters that examine a variety of topics that a newly ordained priest will need to know something about, especially when he begins his pastoral ministry. Unfortunately, these issues are not subjects that a seminarian is trained to deal with before his ordination to the priesthood. In this book, Father Holmes identifies five areas that are essential in leading a parish’s administration: 1.)
Smith presents an excellent reminder to preachers that their duty must be to respect God’s word and unite it with his assembly. The preacher must let the scripture characterize the doctrine and express it in a manner that influences the hearer. Doctrine eventually must inspire our living. Smith provides a lot of examples of this within and even concludes the book with two example sermons that puts what he framed in the rest of the book to practice. The preacher has to be an exegetical escort guiding his people into the proximity of God.
During the movement, Hurston was able to impact countless amount of people with her writings. In the Harlem Renaissance, she was acknowledged for her amazing intelligence, wittiness, and her magnificent writing style and how this unique author desired to fight for the rights of African Americans. During her lifetime she experienced grand success and was very well known, but, however, she also experienced disgrace and was slowly forgotten by the public. She was not well credited for all of her accomplishments, but now she is recognized as one of the best African American writers during the Harlem Renaissance. During her final decade, Hurston had difficulties getting work published.
In Thomas Long’s The Witness of Preaching, he aims to urge the reader to become a reliable witness of the gospel by way of ample preparation before entering a pulpit. The text offers to the reader a deeper understanding of the ministry of preaching. A useful component of the text contains informative bits of information that make the reader aware of the lengthy but necessary preparation needed for an adequate explanation of the scripture. Of primary importance is the consideration of the congregation when a preacher is first approaching the text. This point is of vital importance as it signifies that the speaker is a member of the body of Christ and the congregation.
Ed combats this view with the idea that the point of discipleship is not information, but Christ-like transformation. The second “broken view” presented is the fact that we try to program discipleship. Ed infers that discipleship is so much more than a six-week course, and people are looking for relationships more than discipleship classes. The third “broken view” is that we equate discipleship with our preaching. In fact, 56% of pastors surveyed believe their weekly sermon was the most important discipling ministry in the church.

I have a passion for researching the different contextual expressions of African-American Christianity and the conservative tradition of African-American theology. I interpret African-American Christianity, and by extension its academic discipline, as representative of faith in, love for, and the worship of Jesus Christ in the context of oppression. Some of the basic tenants of the Christian faith are embraced, embodied and defended by African-American Christians through the principles of emancipation and reconciliation. African-American Christianity testifies to the tension between conflict and solidarity that exists within humanity, and with God.
African American Studies was a great experience. Has opened my eyes to my surrounding and the world around me. This course with Dr. Sheba Lo, was something out of me confront zone. I learned so many things from race to cultural to the importance aspect of African American. We are isolated to an environment that hide so much history that we all don’t think they are important to who we have become.
Each and every individual has their own novel character and culture. A "personality" is the picture that one anticipates out into the rest if the world and "culture" is the picture which one has of themselves. A man 's convictions and ethics are made up by culture and stay all through your whole life. Culture is the thing that made you the individual you are today and figures out who or what you relate yourself with. Your experience and childhood is the thing that separates you from other people on the grounds that nobody has been raised the same.
