The Effect of Education in the South Pre 1950s had on Black Students An education is a right that everyone deserves. Even though a education was ‘’given’’ to everyone their was different treatment based on the race of the students.No group of people were more robbed of that right more than african americans.Black schools in the south were never as well funded,cared about or had as much learning freedom as white schools.
Black schools had little to no funding which had a huge effect on the students attending the school. For example, ‘’Texas spent a total of $3.39 or about a third less for the education of African American students than white students’’(Virginia Historical Society). ‘’If black children had any books at all ,they were all hand-me-downs’’ (Brooker Russel ). The children were given substandard learning items this only impaired their ability to learn which was the whole reason they were there. This only took away from the good that the schools were meant to do. This made the parents feel as if the government did not care about the black students. ‘’Ramshackle,segregated schools marked black virginians with a stigma of inferiority and the status of second-class citizenship that they would have to endure throughout their lives. These hardships lowered what the students thought about themselves and let them think that segregation was acceptable. ‘’White school leaders did not want black children to be exposed to ideas like equality and freedom’’(America's Black Holocaust Museum).The civil rights movements are based on the idea of freedom and if the children aren't being taught this then it is only prolonged racism. This was noticed by a man named Carter G. Woodson said that ‘’black children in southern schools were not allowed to use books that included the declaration of Independence or the U.S Constitution. Even though this was getting some attention it was already too late too late to teach the young children the ideas of freedom at school they had to learn about it from their parents.
