Evelyn Castillo Mr. Lopez APUSH Per. 3 Slavery was an essential component to the economy and labor force in the United States that slowly grew into a major conflict that was the main source of tension between the states. They were first brought into the New World around the time of its settling. Slaves were treated inhumanely by Americans and enslaving them was seen as normal.
The Americas were full of tons of ways to make money. Originally the Native Americans were forced to work in mines and plantations, but eventually the use of Native Americans was outlawed. Because of this the african slave trade increased. They were treated horribly and without dignity. The absence of humanitarian concerns influenced the african slave trade in three main ways: treatment, punishment, and transportation.
The Portrayal of Slavery in Antebellum Louisiana in Solomon Northup’s Twelve Years a Slave In his memoire Twelve Years a Slave, illegitimately enslaved Solomon Northup does not only depict his own deprivations in bondage, but also provides a deep insight into the slave trade, slaves’ working and living conditions, as well as religious beliefs of both enslaved people and their white masters in antebellum Louisiana. Northup’s narrative is a distinguished literary piece that exposes the injustice of the whole slaveholding system and its dehumanizing effect. In the Americas, the main exports were silver and cash crops, both of which required work that was terribly tedious and exhausting. This led to the overwhelming predominance of slavery in the Americas, since the Europeans were not willing to carry out the hard work themselves. When the Europeans found they lacked a workforce, the sought slaves elsewhere. While the people who were called slaves changed, the institution never did. The same mistreatment, torture, and horrible conditions were evident in American slavery until it was abolished centuries later.
“Why were Africans Enslaved?” Two authors by the name of Eric Williams and Winthrop D. Jordan gave us their opinions on basically what caused slavery in the article titled, “Why were Africans Enslaved”. In Williams article “Economics, not racism as the root of slavery” he explained that economics was the root cause of slavery. “Slavery was not born of racism: rather, racism was the consequence of slavery...” the beginning quote stated by Mr. Williams.
They enslaved over 11million Africans. As a lot of land was set up for agriculture and plantation, that is why the need for laborers was huge. Before, Native Americans used to work as slaves but when they died because of the diseases, they started looking for more slaves and turned to Africa. Atlantic slave trade was also developed and Africans used to sell other Africans as slaves to the Europeans. Because of the Columbian Exchange, Africa was introduced to potatoes and other new crops.
o African slavery developed in the Chesapeake colonies due to a demand of labor in regions with agricultural economies. As tobacco prices dropped and indentured servants became unfavorable due to a growing number of impoverished freedmen, slaves became the optimal choice and replaced indentured servitude due to the struggling economy. Slaves could endure hard labor and work for long hours, unlike the indentured servants who could not survive in rice paddies with malaria-ridden mosquitoes. Indentured servants were too expensive to maintain and import while slaves, racism made slavery possible. Blues could not exist if the African captives had not become American slaves. Without African slaves from West Africa, there would be no blues music. The immediate predecessors of blues were the Afro-American/American Negro work songs, which had their musical origins in West Africa. It is impossible to say how old the blues are but it is certainly no older than the presence of Negros in the United States. The African slaves brought their music with them to the New World.
The introduction of slavery to the New World was an important aspect that shaped and influenced American culture to what it is today. The introduction of slaves set up the scene for white superiority and domination amongst American society. Slavery started in 1619, when Africans were brought from Africa over to the New World, through a transport system called the “Middle Passage”, to serve as free labor for tobacco production. African slaves became essential to tobacco production and the economy, as the Native Americans that were previously used as slaves, died off from smallpox and other European diseases. With no other option for free laborers, they looked to Africans.
When the New World was discover it depend on slavery to help finance the colonies and the industrial revolution. When the Slavery trade first started it open many jobs for the people in the colonies. They needed people to make the boats, the shackles, also the people that would go and get the slaves. In the south slavery played a big part in the economy, whether it was from working in the cotton plantations to slave trade. The plantation owners would pay the slaves a very low amount of money for the amount of work they did or not pay them at all, they would work for free and that way they would save a large amount of money.

Imagine the U.S. Having slaves until 1865 this is almost 246 years of slavery there was even conflicts about slavery in the U.S. That some states even separated and made their own Union, a union allowing a wealthy person to own, sell and trade people human beings just to do labor work like plantations, fields, house work " maid". The slave trade began in 1619. The slave trade introduced depression, exhaustion, and hard times to the slaves. Slaves were existing the lives of weariness and tiredness (Herman, 2010). Every year different Africans were brought to America as slaves (Herman, 2010).
Very many years ago, slave trade had begun. Jamestown, Virginia in 1619 blacks were compelled to serve the white colonist. (51) That year the Virginians were determined to produce an amount of food to stay alive. The territory occurred annihilate by starvation. They wouldn’t enforce the Native American to put in effort for them, but defenseless African Americans would be suitable.
There were many different varieties of abolitionism during the nineteenth century. For many years, the only disapproval of slavery came from the Quakers, free blacks and slave. Most white Americans that wanted to abolish slavery also supported the deportation of freed slaves to the Central America, the Caribbean or Africa. In 1816, supporters created the American Colonization Society, this organization encouraged the slow abolishment of slavery and the colonization black in Americans in Africa. They later created Liberia on the coast of West Africa, where some free blacks did leave to.
How big of impact could slavery have done to Africa at least that’s what they said? The slave trade had huge and horrible impact on Africa because it resulted in a tremendous loss of life, Africa has not developed economically as a result of the Slave trade, and Africa still suffers and is unable to provide food and water for its people. Africa had a huge loss of people but to be exact “nearly 90 percent of the Africans in these two major regions came from only four zones in Africa. ”(“The Transatlantic Slave Trade”, para 48) all had to go even against their will 10 million enslaved men, women, and children from West and East Africa to North Africa, the Middle East, and India.
