The most crucial change that occurred in the 1920s was the passing of the 19th Amendment. The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote. Continuing the chain reaction, women found more opportunities for employment. For example, advertisers exploited sexual allure to sell everything, which many “old-timers” regarded as a veritable errotic eruption. Although a women’s lifestyle took a giant leap forward, African Americans were still in the same spot.
Starting in 1954 African Americans decided once and for all that now was a sweet time for a revolution. Since the moment they were forced to come to this country they have been treated worse than terrible. They have had to fight and claw for every right they have, and between 1954 and 1965 was an important war. In these years the civil rights movement changed the lives of African Americans for the better, it got the buses and schools desegregated, and gave African Americans the right to vote. In these years separate was no longer considered equal.
During the 1960’s, the Civil Rights Movement was a big topic and controversy with all of the United States. It was quite clear that African Americans did not get treated the same way that whites did. It had been ruled that it was constitutional to be “separate but equal”, but African Americans always had less than the whites did. For example, the schools that they had were run down, and had very little classrooms, books, and buses. Martin Luther King had a large role in the Civil Rights Movement, as did Malcolm X, and others.
In Brown v. Board of Education, the Supreme Court ruled that the racial segregation of public schools was unconstitutional, overruling the principle of separate but equal facilities that were established in Plessy v. Ferguson. The efforts of the civil rights movement also led to the eventual passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as discussed in Document 5. The Civil Rights Act was largely successful in the United States as it allowed equal access for African Americans to public facilities and prohibited the discrimination of African Americans and other minority groups. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was later passed which prohibited the racial discrimination in voting and picked up on the failed enforcement of the 15th Amendment. This shows how the persistent efforts of activists throughout the country allowed for the continued advancement of African American civil rights in the nation even though earlier reform efforts did not fully succeed.

African Americans had an extremely pivotal role in the outcome and consequences of the Civil War. This group of people were enslaved, and forced to work in horrible conditions, for the whole day, without pay. Slaves were one of the main causes of the Civil War. The issue of Slavery, which resulted in the eventual economic and social division between the North and South, caused the creation of the Confederate States. African Americans did not only unintentionally cause the war, but they also effected the outcome of the war, and the eventual consequences the nation would face after the war.
The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was not the only law that benefited African Americans and showcased their success with the uplifting movement. After the violence in Selma the government felt like they had to do something to protect their citizens, so they decided to write the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to help African Americans officially earn the right to vote (Landau). This was a major decision for the government but overall it gave the movement the recognition it deserved for creating such a powerful impact on treatment of African Americans. Thanks to the Voting Rights Act of 1965 many African Americans were able to vote and many African Americans were also put into office because of this one law (Landau 39). The United States would now have African Americans in powerful and important positions in the government instead of just whites.
During the civil rights movement from 1945-1968, activists and the federal government took the action they thought to be most effective to reach their specific goals. Many activists took the ways of protests, like boycotting public transportation, to show their dissatisfaction with the current laws and regulations in place. During the Civil Rights Movement African American were the ones in risk of being killed. Yes, everybody is in risk of being killed by natural disasters, but not everybody during that time were at endanger of being killed because of their race and beliefs. This is the reasons why we fight for our lives as African Americans because we were and still are discriminated by, disrespected, racially profiled, and killed for no reason on a daily basis. In the early fifties there was a large non-violent integration based movement spearheaded by figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks. However, as the time progressed, the movement started seeing a more aggressive leadership with figures such as Malcolm X, but eventually it turned into an extremist movement
During the Civil War the Union Army and slaves faced many hardships. Many problems surfaced during the Civil War whether it was for the Army or for the African Americans serving in the Army in the North. Not only were the African Americans fighting for the Union, they were fighting for their own freedom as well. The African Americans were not only helping themselves, but improving the union army. Even though they might have been considered equal to the Union, they were not always treated as equals compared to other white soldiers.
