To create a strong argument, creative techniques must be employed in any piece of writing. Two common techniques are methods of development and rhetorical devices. In Elizabeth Kolbert’s writing of “The Terrible Teens”, she effectively proves her argument with the use of these techniques. Specifically, Kolbert uses examples, appeal to authority, and, inside the latter, metaphors to further support the argument. Using these strategies she successfully proves that neurology can help us understand why teens do unwise things, and that we are unsure what to do about it.
In these five works youth is seen in a different light; a light that is not always innocent. Through personal experiences, we are molded to how we see the world. The experiences in our youth are therefore even more important as they are the foundation of our perspective. For example, growing up wealthy is different than growing up in poverty. This shows that youth is complex and has many sides to it.
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new” (Socrates) . Everyone encounters change; it is not an if, rather than a when. People believe that they can change their path or what is happening around them. But, most of the time one cannot. So, they end up with a realization of what is truly important; what they should be doing or how they should be acting..
In the words of James Baldwin, “The world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter [...] the way a person looks at reality, then you can change
An example of this is in the story, Calpurnia states, “There’s some folks who don’t eat like us” (Lee 27). This shows some people do not have the luxuries that some other people have. For example, eating well and having a good home life. Calpurnia makes this clear by what she states. The children have to understand that everyone is going through something, and it is better to just respect them.
Many people, every single day, live in the constant fear of the world around them changing and them not having the control to do anything to stop it. Some live in the constant fear of always disappointing the ones they love. The fear that they will not be loyal enough to the family that raised them, only to end up disappointing them anyways. Some have the fear that the world is changing around them and they cannot keep up with it all. Ignoring the change will not make it go away.
Change occurs every day involuntarily. When people encounter change they are limited to only two points of views on it, negatively or positively. Some may react by panicking and going into denial whereas others may try to adapt to it and make the best out of the situation. It can affect one’s life drastically depending on the situation and how they portray it. In the movie “Rivers and Tides” and the story “Metamorphosis,” and the passage, “Simplexity”, change is initially portrayed as positive, but after a series of events it becomes overthrown by negativity.
I looked down at my uncles dead still body and I did not recognize him. He laid there in a coffin dressed in a deep black suit so uncanny to his normal casual attire of navy blue sweatpants and a maroon sweater. Where was his black thinly rimmed glasses that hung off of his large nose? Why was his dark brown hair neatly slicked back off his forehead when it always messily hung over his hazel eyes?
Things can change, as you can see change is not bad. Each time a new president for the united states is elected the usa does go through a dramatic change and can turn into good or bad. You can become someone better or worse. depending on you and your personal experiences. You can change your life into a billionaire if you win the lotto see there is another good change in yourself.
It is important for parents to stop labeling everything thing their teen does as “teen rebellion” (Abowitz). And to stop overly judging what their sons/daughters wears, listen to, and how they speak; the more we label them as teen rebels, the more they will feel like they are
Andy Warhol once said, “They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself”. Change is affected by time and by people in different ways. A negative change can ultimately have a positive outcome. Change is not always bad, but in order for it to be good you need to make it good. Change occurs all the time, and it happens to everyone at one point in his or her life.
The article also points out that parents and other people think they know why teenagers lie but are actually wrong. This is important because Article 4 tells the reader how the reason that teens lie is because they use it when
On the other hand, teenagers ought to escape the confines of bland jobs and occupations, and open themselves up to a new world of opportunities and possibilities. The struggle of man, as adolescent, is epitomized in the final quote from Sammy: “my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter”
In the news there are always people talking about teenagers and about what they do and how they act. Teenagers sometimes make mistakes and have a bad day doing it tennagers have to think about what they do every day no matter what it is or what their doing. Another reason why is because of school and what they do in it. Tennagers aren’t just not careless they sometimes in between ages 15 to ages 17 go out and do things and some tennagers tell their parents what they are doing before they do it also tennagers will not lie about where or what they did to their parents because they will know what will happen to them if they don’t.
Most people are unaware of how change can make life better, but it doesn’t have to be this way. It is up to us to look upon it as something positive and learn how to use it to our own advantage and increase greater levels of
