Introduction
Regardless of race, religion, or gender, everyone has wondered if death is the end or if there is something waiting for us on the other side. Different ideals have explained the nature of death in many ways. Some groups allow their dead to keep reliving in order to eventually achieve the ultimate goal and reach paradise. Others teach rebirth where it is based on the deeds of the previous life to become a higher existence in the next life. Some envision life after death filled with pleasures and never ending happiness for an eternity. They believe that Jesus is the son of God and that there is an afterlife. Upon death, Christians believe that they will be judged before God to decide whether they go to heaven or hell. They also believe that he or she only dies once after their death, soon existing in an afterlife for eternity after their spirit is judged. According to scripture, “It is appointed for men to die once, and after that comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27)
Buddhism & Hinduism
Buddhists believe in reincarnation which is the rebirth to another life after ones death. The determination in his or her level of rebirth determines on the individual’s actions in their life. In the Buddhist religion the ultimate goal to achieve is Nirvana. In Nirvana, all suffering and the desire that causes suffering all comes to an end. It is a state of perfect happiness or an idyllic place that releases the individuals from the cycle of death and rebirth and represents the final stage of Buddhism. Just like Buddhism, Hinduism also believes in reincarnation of souls. A soul is part of a jiva, a living being, who goes through the concept of Karma. Death is therefore a natural process in the existence of a jiva, as a resting period during which it reenergizes and adjusts its course to return to the next phase of life. Atheists lack a belief in a God or Gods and believes that there is no such thing of the afterlife. Both Agnostics and Atheists have reported that they have experienced somewhat of a near- death experience in their lifetime and interpret it as a glimpse the afterlife. As they do believe that all humans eventually die at one point in our life, they don’t believe that there is something waiting for us on the other side of death.
