Over the past fifty years, the air pollution in North Carolina is increasing rapidly. The National Park Service has shown that NC is ranked number eight out of fifty on amount of pollution being produced. The pollution is increasing because of the use of coal burning power plants, paper mills and industrial facilities, and the main cause: transportation. The pollution is occurring in different spots such: ground level ozone, fine particle pollution, and air toxins. In order to reduce the amount of pollution, every so often the pollution will be measured in the ground level ozone and then reported back to the Environmental Protection Agency to monitor it in regards to human health. With this tight monitoring system, pollution count is not as high as it could be.
During this experiment, the use of petroleum jelly will help monitor how much pollution occurs in three different areas in North Carolina. These locations consist of: no traffic which in this case is a farm, a little traffic which is in the yard next to a street, and lastly a road in Carrboro that is generally very busy. These locations have been selected to determine where the most pollution is occurring. This is said because there are industries that are producing a lot of things in only a short period of time. Even though it does not take a lot of time, a lot of pollution occurs from it. With this being said, the farm is expected to have the least amount of pollution while the second location (the yard) is expected to have a little more and the street in Carrboro is expected to have the most pollution.
