Imagine smuggling illegal alcohol into the U.S. During the prohibition era being paranoid. Bootlegging during the prohibition era is when people would illegally traffic alcohol for sale or transportation. Prohibition ended the legal sale of alcohol which then the eighteenth amendment came into place to prohibit it. The prohibition era brought bootlegging more crime for the u.s and more and more people were drinking than before because of bootlegging (“bootlegger”4).
There were million of americans that became criminals because the trade of illegal alcohol. For about thirteen years prohibition lasting many jails and court cases were overflowed with people of trials taking to long(“The Great Consequence”14). The United States intention made the problem even worse because the bootlegger were bringing more alcohol than ever before into the country (“The Great Consequence”14). One of the most popular bootlegger was Al Capone. By Al Capone being know as a bad person to some people he tried to clear up his name as much as he can. Al Capone tried to clear up his name by opening soup kitchens because of the great depression. By cleaning up his image he served about 120,000 meals by december 1931 in Chicago. Many people saw him doing more for the poor than the government. He even hired people to work for him for his good work and also his dirty work. (Al Capone's soup kitchen)
Ohio had a place to take for bootleggers to transport, and sell. Many ohioans liked to drink alcohol but also brewed their own to sell at secret illegal bars called speakeasies. Many bootlegger smuggled alcohol from Canada to ohio by crossing Lake Erie to unpopular beaches. Many bootleggers bribe the law enforcement and gained reputation.
