In The 1920s the American government put a prohibition on alcoholic beverages which led to organized crime and affected American literature. Their reasoning behind this was so that they could send their soldiers off to war sober and end drinking in civilian life as well. Little did the US government know, that this plan would replace drinking and bad judgments within the civilian life of Americans, and replace them with bigger problems such as organized crime, social problems in the cities, and even affect American literature as stated before.

Think about that, think about how bad the public had to of been to put a scare into the government of the united states that made them feel it was necessary to put a ban on all Alcohol which was one of their most successful businesses! There second reason for this act was because they wanted their soldiers to go off to war sober instead of drunk and helpless on the battlefield. These were guys who were put out of business by the 18th amendment, they were out of business bartenders homeless people just trying to make a buck or two, and even politicians. The US Attorney General harry Daughtry, was guilty of selling alcohol to the public illegally right under the nose of the government! This man was a politician, a lot practicing man, a member of the Senate. This just goes to show that bootleggers one of the only ones cashing In on the prohibition of alcohol.

3.1 As you may have gathered this is not a cheerful subject or in fact a great moment in the light for American history. And you would be right. So naturally this had an affect on the American society and American literature as well. One of the ways it changed literature and news clips was in The headlines. The tone of the newspapers was damn and rear every headline had a jail sentence with some new bootleggers face plastered on the front page of it.
