Al Capone was one of the scandalous gangsters of the 1900’s. He made millions of dollars from various illegal businesses. From bootlegging to gambling, he was making money. He didn’t care who he hurt. He also didn’t care what he had to do to get to the top. Capone was ruthless and strong. Sadly, he ended up dying feeble and weak. Americans still remember him by the highs of his career. Alphonse Gabriel Capone was born on January 17,1899 in Brooklyn,New York.

Sonny was sickly as a child. They later found out he contracted syphilis,which he had got from his father.To better provide for his family,Capone,Mary,and Sonny moved to Baltimore. There, he got a job as a bookkeeper for a construction company. He worked there for about two years before changing careers. On November 14,1920, Capone’s father passed away from a heart attack. When Capone returned to New York for his father’s funeral, he ran into Johnny Torrio,his previous boss. Torrio told him that he moved his business to Chicago and wanted Capone to join. So in 1921, Capone and his family moved to Chicago to start his career as a gangster. This was after the Prohibition had begun, and the Torrio-Capone organization organized the sale and distribution of illegal alcoholic beverages (Baughman 2). Much of Al Capone’s success came from taking advantage of the prohibition movement (Baughman 2). Capone had once told reporter Damon Runyon,”I make money by supplying a public demand.If I break the law,my customers . . . some of the best people in Chicago, are as guilty as me”(“Alphonse Capone”
