Alcatraz is located in San Francisco bay 1.25 miles from shore from San Francisco, California, United States. The U.S army first built Alcatraz also known as The Rock as a military prison in 1909. In 1933 America was in crises, it had great depression that unleashed a massive crime wave, criminals would rule the city and gangster would rob banks, that lead to an FBI chief requesting a petition for a super max prison. In 1934 the department of justice took over Alcatraz Island. The purpose of Alcatraz was to isolate some of America’s worst criminals; it was the toughest prison for almost 30 years and had top security level at that time. He was very ingenious that he used simple tools to cut through the bars. John Paul Scott convicted of armed robbery. 3 years after Scott arrived on the rock he is working in the Alcatraz kitchen basement, security there is looser than the rest of the prison. For a few minutes every day Scott heads to the basement with a variety of tools including a simple piece of string covered with flour wax which he used to cut through the bar of one of the windows, it toke him more than a year to cut through bars. On December 16 1962 Scott and an accomplice escape through the window and head of to the water with yet another simple tool rubber gloves. The plan to escape out of Alcatraz was made by four men Frank, the Anglin brothers, and Allen Clayton West, west claimed that he was the master mind behind the plan; he also was the key to the escape. Allen had a prison job, he worked as maintenance which gave him the advantage of moving through the cell blocks and he was able to see an open vent in the ceiling and though he might be able to get out of that vent. All of them had cells near each other which allowed them to communicate with one another at any time, behind these cells was a rarely used utility corridor filled with pipes once they where there it was easy for them to climb three stories onto the roof shaft and from the roof of the cell house down to the water and off the rock, but first they had to find a way out of there ells and into the corridor, they had to make the vents in the back of their cells bigger so they can fit through them. To break through they started with whatever they could find, they also had to conceal the noise of them breaking the concrete, and they worked while other inmates played music. After several months they were finally able to fit though the vents, they used cardboard to make covers where they drilled. Almost 80 inmates knew about the escape plan.
