The deaf subculture is one that is highly overlooked. Many people know there are deaf communities but that is where their knowledge of that subculture ends. Very few people know the depth and vibrancy of the Deaf subculture. There are Deaf theater companies, Deaf film festivals, and Deaf comedy shows. Deaf arts are distinct in a way most hearing people cannot appreciate.
Nicole Casciola Professor Paoli Deaf Culture and Heritage February 23, 2017 Alandra’s Lilacs Reflection Imagine a life where you were unable to use the phone, had to go to school seventy miles from home, and can’t have a conversation with your elder because they didn’t take the time or effort towards learning your language. This was the life of many hard-of-hearing and deaf people during the 1960’s and earlier.
The reading discussed deaf identity, as well as the stigma that is attached to American Sign Language. In one example the author discusses a driving incident where an angry women was yelling at them and after explaining to the woman that they were deaf, the woman angrily stated, “well, if you’re deaf, then read my lips” (Harmon, 2010, p. 32). It becomes clear the many ways that society condescendingly tells disabled people what to do, to follow instructions they give, all while constantly assuming incapability. Deaf individuals are relentlessly being reminded that there is no room for them in this world, when in fact it is society that makes it difficult to maneuver this world through the barriers they create themselves. The reading identifies these misguided societal stresses by stating an, “… emphasis on a shared language rather than on a hearing status… the intention is to avoid reiteration of a problematic hearing-deaf frame of reference” (Harmon, 2010, p. 36).
I was beyond pleased with my choice of book and reading it has been a great experience. I would recommend this book to anyone and believe that they would have the same experience that I did. This book started off in early November, 1964. During 1964 a lot of important things were happening in deaf culture.
The Deaf president Now movement and the American Disability Act have both had a large impact on the deaf community. The impacts that the Deaf President movement had on the deaf community resulted in a change in the hearing communities view on the deaf community. The week long rally that took place March 6, 1988 consisted of a group of members of the deaf community trying to get a deaf president of Gallaudet University elected, opposed to the president of the university being part of the hearing community. They were successful in their attempts and the rally, known as the Deaf President Now movement which resulted in their desire being fulfilled, and showed the hearing community that the deaf community is capable of anything that the hearing
Deaf people lived very differently in the 1900’s than they do today. Texting and subtitles hadn’t been invented yet. They didn’t have the same ways of being able to communicate with hearing people as they do now. So, in the 1900’s, the Deaf population of L.A. created the Los Angeles Club for the Deaf, or the L.A.C.D. It was a source of entertainment and socialization for the Deaf.
The Deaf President Now movement was one of the best things that happened to University, the movement helped the school and the students get a deaf president to lead them. The school has never had a deaf president ever since its been opened. The students of the university wanted a deaf president to lead them so bad they shut down the school until they could get a deaf president. Gallaudet University was the school where all the deaf students went, it was hard for a hard of hearing student to attend a hearing school. The deaf president now was the biggest thing for the deaf and still is unto this day.
Inside Deaf Culture Inside deaf culture is a very strong book written by carol Padden and tom Humphries in this book authors have tried to give a tour of the most important moments that has shaped the Deaf culture. Book starts by showing how much power hearing people have had over the deaf population in the past and how they saw death people almost the same as criminals and also how they tried to get rid of them by placing them into asylums and intuitions and how this was a beginning of first schools for the deaf and how much power and control they had over the children under their care also there was a lot of rumors of how children were molested in these schools and because they

Yet she stood as a great role modle to people all around the world. Helen Keller has made a huge impact on the deaf and blind community.
The book, deaf again, is a witty tale of a hard of hearing boy to a deaf man. Mark drolsbaugh is is wonderful writer who explains his life as being “thrown” in to a hearing world. This book shows how much people didnt know then, and probably still dont know today, about the deaf culture. This book was very eyeopening for a me a hearing reader. Mark use of humor and witty makes this tale of ignorance about hard of hear and deaf children come to life.

When most people think about the Holocaust, their thoughts are automatically directed to the six million Jews who were murdered. While it is true that Jewish people were the primary victims, several multiple other groups faced persecution based on their race, sexuality, beliefs, and handicaps – five million non-Jewish people were killed (Ridley, 2015).
Thomas Gallaudet was an inspirational man and role model for many people all over the world. Not only the Deaf community was impacted by his motivation towards education and communication modes for the Deaf community. Thomas united the hearing community as well as the Deaf community. Thomas was a hard worker and succeeded in nearly everything he did. Thomas traveled to Europe in hopes to uncover education modes for the Deaf.
This past week of class has been my first exposure to American Sign Language and Deaf culture. What I have found most surprising and interesting in Deaf culture is how the community follows a more collectivist mentality. A stark contrast to the American culture I have experienced where the individual is often prioritized. Reading about Andrew Foster's commitment to expanding education for Deaf children worldwide exemplified how deeply rooted this “duty to the group” (p. viii) is within Deaf culture. The Deaf Nation video we viewed at the end of the class also solidified for me how Deaf culture isn't constrained by borders but a community which spans the entire world.
