Alice Walker Alice Walker was a famous author born on February 9th, 1944 in Eatonton, Georgia, to Willie Lee Walker and Minnie Lou Tallulah Grant (Biography Editors). She was an activist for radical civil rights, women’s equality, and peace among other causes that brought black women’s lives into primary focus (Mulready). She had countless pieces of writing which included short stories, novels, essays, and poems. Responsible for the upbringing of eight children, Alice being the youngest, her family struggled a great deal in the poor life (Horsley). This formed a tissue over her eye that was soon removed at the age of fourteen (Biography Editors). However, the effect of this still remained, as Alice became self-conscious and shy (Mulready). This motivated her to remain creative and strong graduating high school as a valedictorian (Mulready). She won countless amounts of scholarships, including one from Spelman College in Atlanta, the college which she attended in the year 1961 (Biography Editors). Her many awards and accomplishments include the the first African American women to receive Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1983 and the National Book Award for “The Color Purple,” “Humanist of the Year” by the American Humanist Association in 1997, and recipient of the Lillian Smith Award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters (Famous People Editors).
