In this lesson, we are introduced to the second ever President of The United States, John Adams. A little biography Adams; much differently looking than Washington, with not as much respect given to him, was vice-president for seven years, and has a Harvard education. He was the top qualifier in the election, or so the people voting thought so. The voters also thought Thomas Jefferson would make a good president, he came in second, according to the Constitution, second place gets Vice Presidency. This biggest issue is that Adams is a Federalist and Jefferson is a Republication. Both took office in 1796, however, only one of them remained in the next presidential term. In, 1798, the Alien and Sedition Act went into place. The Alien part of the Act is for non-citizens, America has the right to export them if they slander the government while the Sedition Act is for current citizens, citizens could be punished by fine or imprisonment for criticism of America. I think this Act is a smart idea because no one should know all the information about the government, word spreads like wild fire and could end up in the wrong ears. If we allowed citizens to criticize the government how they please, other countries could get a hold of that information, use it to their advantage and harm the United States. I am going to have to be a Federalist on this issue. Republications were livid, Jefferson and Madison created the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions in 1799, saying that these states did not believe in the new Act and would not be participating in it.
