Federalism is the separation or distribution of power between several different groups. Each group is given the same power or ability to share control over a central region. The United states practices a form of federalism because laws can be passed by a local,state, or national government. Federalism can often be either detrimental or advantages to a government. Federalism often stems things like local patriotism or a lessened bureaucracy which can favor a government, all the while negatively stemming confusion, wage gaps, and uncertainty.

Federalism can often create a sense of patriotism because it creates a closeness between people and their communities. Federalism prompts local loyalties by allowing people to create laws that may be seen as advantages to them and their own personal community. Federalism also helps in lessening bureaucracy.

The level of bureaucracy that is present in federalism is significantly lower than other government structures. The needs of diverse and heterogeneous populations are often hard to meet because of their level specificity. National level government often increases the difficulty of diverse needs being met, but with federalism local officials have the power to meet such needs further ensuring the peoples safety and security. Federalism also helps in creating democratic laboratories.
