It's always happening. Sometimes it can't even be seen. From societal issues to personal hardships, change is unavoidable in this society. While it is important to focus on the change, we must also consider what motivates us to make the change. Literature is one of the most important tools that humans use to learn about concepts and situations. Literature raises awareness, encourages critical thinking, and provides room for empathy. However, to effectively and meaningfully convey a message, techniques must be utilized to further educate, emotionally link the reader to the subject, and provide space for the reader to challenge their views and beliefs. One of the techniques used is first-person narration. This technique gives readers an insight into his thoughts and emotions throughout the different stages of life the author describes, giving readers a chance to relate to him. That, in turn, allows the viewer to find relatability and form a personal connection with him while reading. Another technique used was flashbacks, which provides the reader with more context to explain and give reason to his actions and motivations. For example, he touches on how his "mother was agoraphobic, which means she was often housebound, terrified of stores, cars and crowds" (Christie, par.6). That flashback gives context to his comparison "I realized I needed to be skateboarding in the streets as much as she needed to be safe in the house" (Christie). Hadn't he included background insight into his mom's condition, the meaning behind his comparison between his need to skateboard and his mom's need to stay home would have gone over the heads of the readers.
