This novel includes many elemental traits; it has allusion, tone, symbolism and many more. These three are some that stand out a bit more and have been placed throughout the novel a bit more. To start, allusion is one of the few that is highly noticeable. Allusion is defined as an indirect or passing reference. Stevenson did this a couple times in the novel, but the first time this was used in the novel was in the beginning of the story. Stevenson introduced both Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde without giving names of these two and before both characters were introduced to each other. “For my man was a fellow that nobody could have to do with, a really damnable man; and the person that drew the cheque is the very pink of the proprieties, celebrated too” (Stevenson …show more content…

Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” has a tone in which makes one feel suspense, thrill, and much more. Stevenson manages to throw a feel of a sinister alter ego with Mr. Hyde. (The British Library). One other noticeable element in this novel is symbolism. Symbolism is one that stands out the most and is used more often than tone. This novel is filled with symbolism; Stevenson had used symbolism in many situations of this novel. Within the novel, there is a part in which mentions a door in which is like a way for Hyde to be able to come and go from Jekyll’s home without being hindered. This door also symbolizes a way for Jekyll to show his true evil, being Hyde. Another good part in which used symbolism was when Jekyll used the salt for his experiment. The salt is symbolized as being impure because it’s what caused Jekyll’s dark side, which is revealed. The salt not only is symbolical in its own way but it is also a form of irony. This is ironic because the impurity of the salt caused the experiment to be a success but it also caused the second personality in Jekyll to come out (Ruwe).
