Stomping up the stairs, Doors slamming, objects hitting the floor they are all things adolescents do when frustrated or even stressed. The main character Ted in author Alma Luz Villanueva “Golden Glass,” is a loner who has no father in his life & main character Maya in author Jean Davies Okimoto’s “My Favorite Chaperone,” is asking her mom to adjust to American customs. Both adolescents Ted & Maya face many obstacles to overcome as they begin to mature, but no longer feel like outsiders.

Ted is an “angular and clumsy” teenager who is, most of the time to himself. He doesn’t really have a connection with his family, besides his mom, he is most of the time selfish. “He seemed always to be at the center of his own universe, so it was no surprise to his mother to hear Ted say: “I’m building a fort and sleeping in it all summer, and I won’t come in for anything, not even food.”(Paragraph 2, Page 3) That was such surprise to his mother Vida because food is the sentimental value that connects their love. Noticeably, “This has been their silent communion, the steady presence of love that flowed daily-food.”(Paragraph 3, Page 3) This represents that food is the closeness of their relationship. Without food, the connection of communication would probably be just as lost as the rest of the family and Ted would be a complete loner. Similarly, pair Ted & Maya eventually find their path. Both in different ways. Ted’s path is found through a special glass, the Golden Glass. As Ted is living outside in his fort, he is also in summer school and obviously taking some classes. Summer school is what basically pulled Ted to a realization of some sort. “Ted was taking a makeup course and one in stained glass.
