Delving into the minds of individuals in need intrigues me greatly. I possess a deep passion to have an insight into these minds, to discover the hidden depth and meanings behind psychological disorders. The extraordinary abilities of the human mind can be compared to an intricate puzzle, so far deemed impossible to solve. There are few things that arouse greater fascination than the complexity of the brain, the origin of behaviour, cognition and personality. Are some people more neurologically inclined to exhibit certain behaviours? Understanding such phenomena is of great importance- mental health. The concept of uncertainty enthrals me. Volunteering within school and my community has provided me with a unique set of personal skills and useful experience that will become of significant use as I progress through my studies. Six months ago, I attended a Dementia Friends session which inspired me to further my knowledge of the condition and raise awareness for those affected by Alzheimer’s. Following this, I organised a family fun day to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society with the help of a group of students. Through this experience, I have been able to show that I am a determined individual with a passion to succeed and a real desire to help others by making a positive influence on their lives. Ambition, leadership, determination, confidence are only a few examples of the qualities that I have been able to amplify through this experience. These skills have also been displayed during my time helping students progress in maths by assessing issues and setting individual work targets for them to succeed. The skill of assessment and recognising individual issues is essential when observing and interpreting mental processes and human behaviour in order to reach a diagnosis and create a personalised treatment plan. To challenge myself emotionally, I applied for work experience at a residential care home where I was given the role of a care assistant. During this time, I spent time with individuals with a range of disorders and diseases such as Dementia. Dealing with a group of highly vulnerable individuals was a constant challenge due to the intense environment but it helped me cultivate confidence, evolve my compassion and verify my own stability.
