What if your friend wanted to commit suicide? What’s the first thing you would do? Scream? Cry? Help? Many people wish they had helped their friend before they committed suicide. Being the victim is scary, being the witness is scarier, and being the bystander is the scariest.
Suicide has been a problem for a very long time. It can be caused by stress, anxiety, bullying, and mental illnesses. Teen suicide is a huge problem because there are so many situations that can stress people out and just make them give up, especially as a teen. Bullying is a huge part of teen suicide. It can make them feel isolated and powerless. Stories like that of Amanda Todd still doesn’t stop the bullying. On her youtube, people are still making comments that she should kill herself, even though she is already dead, and that they are glad that she committed suicide. More girls attempt suicide but boys have a higher success rate. This is because boys have a harder time asking for help. Also boys tend to use more violent methods than girls. Young family members of victims may have lower self-esteem and may need adult guidance. Also, some might bury their emotions. This can cause a break down when they “can’t take anymore.” This is because when kids encounter or experience a tragic event, there are fewer resources for them to grab onto. Other people who are close to the victim might be bullied because some people believe that the victim wasn’t strong. In Australia there was a little boy who walked up the stairs from watching tv and hung himself. When his brother walked up the stairs to look for him they found that he had tried to stop but couldn’t because there were claw marks all the way down the walls. The whole community was affected. The whole school was in therapy for months and the principal was doing interventions. Many students had no closure and were left wondering if they did something or if they could have done something. One of the sayings that the people who run this program have is that your social networth is equal to social network. This means that your friends have a large part in how you feel.
