The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. was created in 1937 and is a part of the American Board of Medical Specialties. The purpose of The American Board of Plastic Surgery Inc. is to provide certifications to surgeons who commit to providing the best quality care by staying up-to-date with evidence-based procedures, demonstrate a high level of competency within their area of expertise, and who hold themselves to higher standards than what is minimally required of to maintain their medical licensure. Their mission is to “promote safe, ethical, and efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, and certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists. Board certified surgeons commit themselves to continuously learn, even years after they have left their formal education.

To become board certified, a surgeon will submit applications for examination and must pass both a written and oral exam. The written exam consists of 400 multiple choice questions that test the surgeon’s content knowledge and expertise. The oral examination is administered over two and a half days. Surgeons will submit medical cases, with consent from the patient, from a nine-month case log period and they will present on five of the fifty minimum case requirement.
Once a surgeon successfully obtains his or her board certification, the surgeon will be regarded as a diplomate of The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Inc. To determine that a diplomate have committed to a lifetime of learning, he or she must maintain their certification through a program called the Maintenance of Certification in Plastic Surgery (MOC-PS®).
