American homelessness is growing at a faster rate than the general population. As of 2023, statistics have proved that over 500,000 people across the United States are experiencing homelessness. In a developed country filled with opportunities, that number has steadily increased by 6% yearly; statistics only tell parts of the story.
Living on the streets is a brutal experience, and living in a shelter does not make it any better. Shelters have been deemed chaotic and unsafe places; especially with the rise of homelessness, it is harder to accommodate the needs of those people.

Pathways to homelessness.
When a homeless person walks down the street asking for food or money, society initially believes drug usage or laziness is the result of homelessness. However, that is not the case for many individuals. The lives of many have been derailed due to a combination of reasons such as illness, job loss, etc.
In an economy that is created to flourish, wealth is not distributed among all people. While the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer.
As we construct America to be a modern and sustainable place, we can witness how the prices of homes and buildings increase significantly more than a minimum wage worker’s income. After paying rent and utilities, most people are left with little to no income to cover other necessities needed for survival. Because of this, some people are unable to make ends meet since they are forced to make a decision; one that will influence how their income will be dispersed.

A common misconception is that homelessness only impacts those who are poor or disadvantaged in our American society. However, this myth is incorrect. Homelessness can touch the lives of anyone at any time, including those who may think they are not vulnerable.
The various stereotypes that homeless individuals have been labeled as make it hard for people who are fortunate to show compassion. It causes a significant decline in public assistance.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government provided some sort of financial aid that assisted many individuals and their families to make ends meet during those dreadful moments. However, since all good things come to an end, the discontinuation resulted in people being placed back in the predicament they were previously in.
